Modern production and consumption patterns and the associated, growing challenge of environmental impacts, call for a deeper understanding of how strategic improvements can be made in systems at the corporate, sector and society levels. Industrial ecology aims at giving students a holistic theoretical foundation and analytical skills to effectively address these challenges.

About the Study Programme NTNU's Industrial Ecology Programme was created in the mid 1990s. Today it is a world leading academic programme in industrial ecology. The focus is on state-of-the-art methods for environmental systems analysis and strategies for policy and management, as well as on the application of such strategies and methods to critical systems.

Energy production, industrial product and process design, industrial symbiosis, sustainable consumption, environmental management, climate change, corporate social responsibility, policy analysis, sustainable buildings, transportation, infrastructure, and waste recycling are examples of areas we work with. We study how materials and energy flow within different systems, what factors influence these flows, and how environmental impacts can be reduced. Our research and expertise in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Material Flows Analysis (MFA) and Input-Output analysis (IO) is world-renowned.

The MSc in Industrial Ecology is a two-year full-time degree programme targeted toward both Norwegian and international students. All courses are taught in English. Students take some compulsory courses and can also choose their own elective

Study Environment The MSc programme recruits international and Norwegian students with a variety of disciplinary and cultural backgrounds. In fact, many MSc students in other engineering disciplines participate in industrial ecology courses because of their relevance to business and policy today. Through a focus on group work, projects, and contact with industry and government, the MSc Programme provides an exciting learning environment which extends beyond classroom teaching.

Job Opportunities A focus on systems-level understanding and analytical skills, as well as experience applying state-of-the-art environmental assessment methods and policy strategies to real world problems, makes our students attractive to a wide range of employers. Our graduates are now active in research or leading strategic environmental projects in business, industry and governmental agencies

Master's Degree Programme, 2 years Our Masters programme provides students with the ability to apply the analytical tools of Industrial Ecology to a wider range of environmental issues and across different scales, from individual production processes through value chains to national economies. Analysis serves to quantify environmental impacts, understand how environmental stresses are produced, and to evaluate proposed solutions or alternative courses of action.

Issues in the industry-environment context that are relevant are: energy, waste, industrial parks and networks, as well as sustainable production and consumption. The students are equipped for jobs in research, policy analysis (government, civic actors), and technical analysis in large companies and consultancies.

The two year course of study consists of the following elements:

* Core courses in Industrial Ecology, taken by all students in the programme.
* A total of 120 credits: 30 credits per semester.
* Elective courses allowing the students to acquire additional skills or factual knowledge in a field directly relevant to their Master's thesis.
* A project and a Master's thesis.

* Schooling: * Applicants must hold a BSc/BEng/BA degree within Engineering, Industrial Design, Architecture, Natural Sciences, Political Sciences, Social Sciences, Psychology, Economics, Business and Administration, or similar. * Prior Knowledge, Experience and Motivation: * The programme has a strong focus on modeling and requires good skills in mathematics. The intensity of the study programme does usually not allow students to take mathematics courses during the programme. Applicants must have obtained at least 7.5 ECTS in mathematics or statistics during their previous studies. * Introductory knowledge of environmental science or environmental management is strongly recommended. * Applicants from outside a Nordic University are required to submit a motivation letter. * Language Requirements: * A passing grade from a Norwegian upper secondary school (videregående skole) * TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) with a minimum score of 90 points on the internet based test * IELTS (International English Language Testing Service) with a minimum overall band score of 6.5 * University of Cambridge tests: - First Certificate in English - Certificate in Advanced English - Certificate of Proficiency in English English Language Requirements IELTS band: 6.5 TOEFL paper-based test score : 600 TOEFL iBT® test: 90
