Description

Students undertaking postgraduate coursework in Information Technology have access to a flexible and integrated program comprising the Master of Information Technology, Master of Information Technology (Professional) and Master of Information Technology (Advanced). The Master of Information Technology is a broad, flexible technical information technology Masters degree.

The program provides graduates with training and experience (according to personal development needs) by developing expertise in their desired fields. The Master of Information Technology (MIT) program is designed to cater to both those who currently work in the industry but have no formal qualification and those with tertiary qualifications in another discipline and little information technology background but who wish to gain a qualification that will allow them to pursue an IT career.

Comprised of core and specialised coursework, the Master of Information Technology will have you study internet communications, strategic business systems, database management, systems analysis and information systems implementation. You will also complete an introductory course in software engineering. The University of Newcastle has developed this program to offer a solid foundation in a breadth of technical areas, preparing you for the remainder of the program, where you will select from a number of specialist areas.

Depending on your career goals, you can specialise your qualification by selecting one of the following majors:

  • Computer science – study of the scientific and practical application of computation through operating systems, compiler design, advanced algorithmic, data security and computer graphics.
  • Design – focussing on usability and interaction design, you will learn the principles of effective web usability and design via a number of case studies. At the end, you will have a thorough understanding of niche usages such as intranets, users with disabilities and international users.
  • e-Business - understanding the principles behind successful e-business will see you broaden your knowledge and ability to effectively use this medium in your own workplace.
  • Electrical engineering – comprehension of advanced computer systems and engineering project management
  • Information Technology - cement existing skills and interest in the area of information technology through courses including web database interfacing, distributed computing technologies, 3D modelling animation and rendering and computer games production.
  • Software Engineering - with the possibility to take your career in multiple directions, this major will explore advanced software process, user interface design, software analysis and verification, software development and object oriented software engineering.
  • Statistics - broaden your ability to critically appraise management techniques, choose appropriate statistical techniques for improving processes and write reports to management. Develop your theoretical and practical understanding of quality management and influence management decisions by applying sound statistical data.

To round out your study, you will also select from a range of professional studies, such as engineering project management and project planning and management.

Students with a three year Bachelor degree (AQF Level 7) in a different discipline area (also called non-cognate discipline) to Information Technology are eligible to undertake the 160 unit program which can be completed in 2 years full time or 4 years part time.Students with a three year Bachelor degree (AQF Level 7) in a non-cognate discipline who also hold a minimum of two years demonstrable Recognised Prior Learning (RPL) in an area related to Information Technology (also called cognate discipline) will study between 120 and 160 units. These students must apply to the Program Convenor or Head of School for advanced standing in the Masters, in recognition of relevant RPL. These applications will be considered on a case-by-case basis.Students with a three year Bachelor degree (AQF Level 7) in an Information Technology discipline (or cognate discipline) are eligible to undertake a 120 unit program which can be completed in 1.5 years full time or 3 years part time.Students with a four year Bachelor degree (AQF Level 8) in a non-cognate discipline or a combination of a three year Bachelor degree in a non-cognate discipline with a Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma (AQF Level 8) also in a non-cognate discipline are eligible to undertake a 120 unit program which can be completed in 1.5 years full time or 3 years part time.Students with a four year Bachelor degree (AQF Level 8) in an Information Technology discipline (cognate discipline) or a combination of a three year Bachelor degree in a non-cognate discipline and a Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma (AQF Level 8) in an Information Technology discipline (cognate discipline) are eligible to undertake the 80 unit program which can be completed in 1 year full time or 2 years part time. The Master of Information Technology program is not an accredited program but does satisfy requirements for individual ACS membership at the Associate level. Students seeking ACS membership should consult the Program Convenor and the Australian Computer Society about their proposed study to ensure they select courses most relevant for those seeking ACS membership.
