Family Studies is an established discipline in the United States and is growing elsewhere in the world. You'll be expected to:

• engage in constructive public discourse to sustain and strengthen families across the globe.
• apply logical, critical and creative thinking.

• apply the ability to act effectively and ethically in decision-making and problem-solving.

Program & Courses

Because of the global nature and different hemispheres of consortium members, the word semester or spring, summer, and fall are not used to describe the start or stop period for courses. Academic terms for the program will run:

• January – April
• May – August
• September – December

No holiday breaks will be recognized during the terms.

The program is made up of 7 core courses (24 credits), 15 credits of a combination of courses and other learning experiences to total 36 credits.

Option I Master's Degree:

• 21 credits from the 7 required core courses
• 9 credits practicum/internship or a combination of practicum/internship and elective coursework
• 6 credits of master’s thesis

Option II Master's Degree:

• 21 credits from the 7 required core courses
• 6 credits from elective course(s)
• 6 credits from practicum/internship
• 3 credits research other than thesis

Core CoursesCYAF 837 Families Across the Life Course 3 credit hours

• Exploration of family interactions and individual development across the life span and the cultural, political, and social factors that impact development globally.

CYAF 844 Family Centered Practice Approaches 3 credit hours

• Material and course experiences prepare students for family centered practice regardless of discipline. Course content emphasizes the family as the unit of observation, programming, and intervention.

CYAF 884 Foundations in Family Studies 3 credit hours

• Introduction to the trans-disciplinary field of Family Studies from global perspectives. Theoretical and research approaches to the study of the family in varied cultural and national contexts will be explored.

CYAF 885 Families and Cultural Diversity 3 credit hours

• Critical understanding of the diversity of family forms in their cultural contexts. The impact of history, tradition and contemporary trends on families will be explored. Emphasis will be on recognizing, accepting, and working within a context of diversity of culture and family form.

CYAF 886 Strengths and Challenges of Families Across the World 3 credit hours

• Theoretical, practical and experiential learning to enhance understanding of family strengths and challenges across the world. Principles for developing culturally sensitive strengths-enhancing programming for children and families throughout the world will be addressed.

CYAF 887 International Perspectives On Family Policy 3 credit hours

• Analysis of the systems, contexts and policies that affect individuals and families throughout the world.

CYAF 889 Program Design, Implementation, and Evaluation 3 credit hours

• Principles and methods of program design, implementation, and outcome evaluation of family programs in global contexts and across the globe.

Accreditation

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, one of six regional accrediting agencies. The University of Nebraska-Lincoln has been continuously accredited since 1913. The Office of Academic Affairs is responsible for coordinating University efforts to prepare for the accrediting agency’s periodic site visits and reviews. The university last underwent a comprehensive self-study and site visit during the 2006-07 academic year. The next comprehensive evaluation will be in 2016-17.
