The MA in International Journalism is a full-time three semester programme covering the practice and theory of journalism in an international context. It is particularly suited to international students as, in contrast to the MA in Journalism, it does not assume knowledge of the Irish context. It prepares students to work on international new stories, whether for national or regional news organisations or with international news agencies or media organisations.

The programme aims to produce graduates who are skilled in the techniques of journalism and who have a keen understanding of journalism`s role in democracy and civil society. As this is an MA programme, students are required to engage in the critical and theoretical components of the course.

The programme includes tuition, practical experience, a wide range of assignments, seminars, tutorials and group projects.

There are three strands to the programme: practice, context and content.

The practice strand offers a full and thorough grounding in the skills and practice of journalism from news gathering and news writing to features and investigative reports,subbing and layout, sound recording and editing.

The context strand provides a theoretical and critical framework for international journalism in its social, cultural and historic context. This includes a dissertation in the third semester.

The content strand is intended to give students an understanding of subjects areas relevant to the practice of journalism internationally.
They choose from a range of options including politics, business, development issues and English.

The taught modules take place in the first two semesters from September to June. The dissertation is completed in the third semester and submitted in January.

Semester 3:

Context:
Dissertation

The minimum entrance requirement is an honours 2:2 degree or its equivalent in any discipline. Applicants for whom English is a second language must have a score of 7.5 overall in each components of the IELTS or equivalent. A demonstrable interest and commitment to journalism is a key criteria for selection.Where possible selection will be by interview. Otherwise, applicants will be required to complete a specific application form. This form should be accompanied by evidence of articles written or published and details of work in college publications, newspapers or radio, etc.Note: Due to the considerable competition for our postgraduate programmes satisfying the minimum entry requirement is not a guarantee of a place. Depending on the programme of study applications will be assessed based on your academic grades and may also take into account your work/life experience.
