Educational organisation

The programme is completed in two different countries.

The MSc in International Management consists of three study blocks: two study blocks of lectures and coursework, and one thesis study block. The entire programme is taught in English.

The first study block is spent at one of the ESB's partner universities in France, Mexico, Italy, or the USA, and the following two semesters at the ESB in Reutlingen. During the third study block at ESB, students complete a thesis, often in conjunction with a company.

Class sizes are small, which allows for intensive interaction with lecturers. Our lectures and seminars enable students to work in small, intercultural and interdisciplinary teams. All professors who lecture on the programme have many years of academic and professional experience in their respective fields, ensuring a high academic standard and a strong practical orientation. In addition, experienced senior representatives from the corporate world are involved in the teaching of the programme. We are therefore able to complement the theoretical dimension of our teaching with the most up-to-date best practice from the world of business.

Study abroad unit(s)

Participants spend their first study block at one of the following partner institutions:
Northeastern University, Boston, USA
Neoma Business School, Rouen campus, France
Universidad de las Américas, Puebla, Mexico
Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Piacenza, Italy

The second and third study blocks take place in Reutlingen.

Internships

Internships are not a compulsory part of the programme, unless the participant holds a six-semester/three-year (180 ECTS) first degree without a minimum of 24 weeks of work experience subsequent to graduation (see Academic/Other Requirements). Such students are required to complete a compulsory internship of 24 weeks at the end of the second study block before they can be allowed to proceed to the thesis phase of the programme. This is to ensure that all students graduating from the ESB have 300 ECTS upon graduation (German national legislation).

All students must write a Master's thesis, which can be written with a company. In this case, students normally complete an internship, which may have a maximum duration of six months.

Forms of assessment

There are various forms of assessment during the first two study blocks, including group projects, individual research papers, presentations, case studies, and written exams. In the third study block, a Master's thesis must be completed.

Course objectives

The MSc International Management combines theory with insights from managerial experience in two countries.

Upon graduation, students are expected to have acquired the knowledge and skills needed for a future career in top executive positions with increasing responsibility in international management. Graduates are ideally suited to take up positions with companies operating in the global market. Furthermore, graduates of the IPBS MIM will have demonstrated that they are able to adapt successfully to very different learning environments and teaching techniques. They also have the option of proceeding to doctoral studies.

Language requirements

Applicants must prove their English skills through one of the following tests:
TOEFL minimum 220 (cbt) or 83 (ibt)
IELTS score of 6.5 (with at least 6 in each of the individual components)
Applicants from Bachelor's programmes taught entirely in English just need to provide confirmation of this fact from their universities; they are exempt from TOEFL or IELTS.

Academic requirements

The programme is open to candidates with a good first degree (German minimum 2.5) in business or a related field (e.g., engineering, law, economics) with a minimum of six months of work experience (e.g., internships during Bachelor's degree). Candidates with a degree in a discipline other than business must demonstrate business knowledge by having taken at least four business courses at undergraduate level, two of which should be in the quantitative area (e.g., accounting, finance, statistics, economics, logistics). The programme can accommodate applicants whose first degree had a duration of six, seven or eight semesters (three, three and a half, four years) (180, 210, or 240 ECTS). Candidates with 180 ECTS points (three-year Bachelor's degree) who wish to graduate from ESB Business School are required to complete an additional compulsory integrated internship of 24 weeks. Candidates with the appropriate minimum of 24 weeks of work experience subsequent to graduation may have this pre-accredited instead.
Fluency in English to be proven either by a TOEFL test, minimum 220 (cbt) or 83 (ibt) or an IELTS test score of 6.5 with at least 6 in each of the individual components

Arrival support

In Reutlingen, a Programme Coordinator is assigned to assist students during the entire programme. Students are given instructions by e-mail on how to proceed upon arrival, etc. The Coordinator organises an orientation programme, which begins directly once the students have arrived. Support from the Coordinator is available continuously throughout the programme.

Services and support for international students

The Programme Coordinator in Reutlingen offers continuous support for the duration of the programme. The Programme Director as well as the Secretary's Office, the International Studies Office, and the Career Center are also available to provide additional support.

Accommodation

A small number of private apartments are reserved for students on this programme. The Programme Coordinator provides participants with full details about accommodation well in advance of their arrival in Germany. There are also four halls of residence on campus. Students can find the application forms on the university's homepage. Off-campus accommodation options and private offers can be found there as well, and assistance is also available via online blackboards, the Student Secretary's Office and the International Studies Office.
