Course Content

During the freshman year, students are introduced to the study of law through the basic courses such as Introduction to Law, Constitutional Law, Civil Law and Roman Law. These courses provide an in-depth understanding of the concepts such as rule of law, code of conduct, justice, order and sanction. The fundamentals of dogmatic law are covered. Students are also introduced to Private Law and Public Law through the Civil Law and Constitutional Law courses.

During the sophomore year, students are acquainted with professional and technical law through the courses on Criminal Law, Law of Obligations, Administrative Law, and Public International Law. Blending theory and practice together, these courses offer students an opportunity to put their knowledge into practice. Thus students gain a holistic understanding of the laws in force and their execution.

During the junior year, students are offered courses on Special Provisions of Criminal Law, Special Provisions of Law of Obligations, Property Law, Law of Civil Procedure, Commercial Law, General Public Law, Philosophy of Law, and Sociology. The junior year courses prepare students to their future tracks in which they will specialize. Students are also offered courses on how to start and manage a business during their junior year.

The senior year curriculum is comprised of the Criminal Procedure Law, Execution and Bankruptcy Law, Maritime Commercial Law, Private International Law, Law of Inheritance, Labor and Social Security Law courses. With the senior year curriculum, students complete the basic courses on Private Law and Public Law.

The Faculty of Law currently has 14 full-time faculty members. All our faculty members are the graduates of the reputable universities, with vast national and international experience.

Lecturers

Yener Ünver

Professor, Dean

Prof. Dr. Yener Ünver works as the Dean of the Faculty of Law. Prof. Yener Ünver received his LLB from Istanbul University in 1986. He obtained his LLM and PhD in Public Law from the Graduate School of Social Sciences at Istanbul University in 1990 and 1996, respectively. Between 1989 and 1992, Prof. Ünver delivered the General Provisions of Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure Law courses at Istanbul University. Following his PhD, Prof. Yener taught undergraduate courses on General Provisions of Criminal Law, Special Provisions of Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure Law, Mass Communication Law and International Criminal Law at the School of Law and School of Economics at Istanbul University as an assistant professor till 2001. He was appointed an associate professor and a professor in 2002 and 2008, respectively. Since his associate professorship, Prof. Yener Ünver taught the General Provisions of Criminal Law, Special Provisions of Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure Law, Mass Communication Law and International Criminal Law courses at the School of Law at Istanbul University between 2002 and 2007. Between 2004 and 2006, he delivered the Sports Law course at the School of Physical Education and Sports at Istanbul University. Between 2002 and 2006 he taught the General Provisions of Criminal Law, Special Provisions of Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure Law couses at the School of Law at Akdeniz University. Between 2005 and 2007 and between 2008 and 2011, he gave lectures on Special Provisions of Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure Law at the School of Law at Istanbul Commerce University. Between 2006 and 2011, Prof. Ünver also taught LLB, LLM and PhD courses on Criminal Procedure Law, Mass Communications Law, Criminology, Comparative Criminal Law and Medical Law at the School of Law at Yeditepe University. Prof. Yener Ünver's research interests include general provisions of criminal law, special provisions of criminal law, criminal procedure law and medical law. Prof. Ünver has especially focused on comparative criminal law since 2005. Until June 2012 he worked as vice chairman of Türk Ceza Hukuku Dernegi.

Cevdet Atay

Professor

Prof.Cevdet Atay will work as a Professor at the Faculty of Law. Prof. Cevdet Atay obtained his LL.B. degree from Ankara University Faculty of Law in 1966. He received his LL.M. and Ph.D. degrees from Montpellier University Faculty of Law in France. He was appointed as an Associate Professor and Professor in 1982 and 1990, respectively. Pursuant to his retirement from public service, Prof. Atay started to serve as a faculty member at foundation universities. He focused on various branches of public law in his studies. His main research interests are administrative auditing and judicial auditing.

Havva Karagöz

Professor

Prof. Havva Karagöz received her LL.B. degree from Istanbul University Faculty of Law in 1986. She obtained her LLM. degree from Istanbul University in 1996 with a thesis entitled "Real Guarantee under Roman Law". She received her Ph.D. degree from Istanbul University Faculty of Law, with a thesis entitled "The Nature of Traditio and Constitutum Possesorium". In 1997, she was appointed as an Associate Professor at Istanbul University Faculty of Law. Prof. Dr. Havva Karagöz is giving roman law lectures at law faculty.

Jan C. Joerden

Professor

After Prof. Dr. Jan C. Joerden had studied in Law Faculty of Hamburg University, he obtained "Dr. iur." degree from Erlangen-Nürnberg Law Faculty of Friedrich-Alexander University in 1985. He obtained the title "Associate Professor" with classes criminal law, philosophy of law, logic of law from Erlangen-Nurnberg Law Faculty of Friedrich-Alexander University in 1987. In the same year his habilitation was awarded the Prize "Konrad Hellwig". After he had been assigned as Professor to Erlangen-Nurnberg Law Faculty of Friedrich-Alexander University in 1992, he was assigned to the chairs of criminal law, especially international criminal law and comparison of criminal law, philosophy of law in Frankfurt (Oder) Viadrina Europe University in 1993. In 1994 he was assigned to Professorship of University for life time. In 2009 he became the Director of the research group of "The effects of the improvements of medicine technique on human image and human dignity" in the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research at Bielefeld University. In 2011 he was elected as the president of academic senate of Frankfurt (Oder) Viadrina Europe University. Until 2011 he has 194 titles in his publication list. He is specialized in criminal law, criminal medicine law, criminal procedure law, philosophy of law and logic of law.

Mustafa Alper Gümüs

Professor

Prof.Dr.Mustafa Alper Gümüs obtained his B.Sc. from Ankara University Faculty of Law.,LL.M. in Marmara University in 1995 and Ph.D. in Marmara University in 2000. He won the 2002 Çaga Law Prize. He received the title of Associate Professor of Civil Law in 2006.

He taught undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate courses in Civil Law between 2000 and 2012 at the Yeditepe University Faculty of Law, Bigi University Faculty of Law, Maltepe University Faculty of Law and Galatasaray University Faculty of Law. His researches include areas of law of obligations, law of family, property law, -in particular- responsibility of counselor.

Osman Korkut Kanadoglu

Professor

Prof. Korkut Kanadoglu received his LL.B. degree from Istanbul University in 1990. He obtained his LL.M. and Ph.D. degrees in Public Law from the Institute of Social Sciences at Istanbul University in 1992 and 1998, respectively. After obtaining his Ph.D. degree Prof. Kanadoglu continued to serve as a faculty member at the Faculty of Law at Istanbul University. He was appointed an Associate Professor and a Professor in 2005 and 2010, respectively. Prof. Korkut Kanadoglu taught undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate courses in Constitutional Law at the Galatasaray University Faculty of Law between 2001 and 2003, at the Istanbul University Faculty of Law between 2003 and 2009 at the Yeditepe University Faculty of Law between 2009 and 2011. His research interests in Constitutional Law particularly focus on law of freedom, constitutional jurisdiction, and law of political parties. Prof. Dr. Korkut Kanadoglu is giving constitutional law lectures at law faculty.

Paul Tiedemann

Professor

Prof. Dr. iur. Dr. phil. Paul Tiedemann studied Law and Economics in Frankfurt am Main Johann-Wolfgang-Goethe University (1969-1974) and German University of Administrative Sciences Speyer (1975). He obtained the title "Dr. iur." in 1976 with a dissertation on the branch of administrative law; moreover he received the title "Dr. phil." in 2006 with a thesis on the field of philosophical humanitarian right. He has taken judging responsibility in Hessian Administrative Jurisdiction since December 1979 and also for many years in Frankfurt Administrative Court. Furthermore he gave lectures regarding to general administrative law and constitutional law in Wiesbaden University of Applied Sciences (Police and Administration) between the years 1988-2004. He gave lectures regarding to philosophy of law in Saarland University between the years 2004-2007 and also refugee law in Gießen Justus-Liebig University since 2007 fall. He found Refugee Law Clinic in there for the first time in Germany. He awarded the prize "Exzellenz in der Lehre" (Excellence in the Doctrine) of Hessian Academy amount of 100,000 Euro with his team. He has been in charge in Gießen University since July 2011 as Honorable Professor. Prof. Dr. Dr. Tiedemann is one of the founding members of "Neue Richtersvereinigung NRV" (New Association of Judges) and member of "International Association of Refugee Law Judges (IARLJ)" and "Internationalen Vereinigung für Rechts- und Sozialphilosophie IVR" (International Association of Philosophy of Law and Social Philosophy). Until 2011 he has 149 titles in his publication list. The third edition of his comprehensive major work, named "Human Dignity as a Legal Concept- A Philosophical Explanation" will be published as the third edition within 2012.

Altan Heper

Assistant Professor

Dr. Altan Heper will work as an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Law. Dr Altan Heper obtained his BSc from the University of Istanbul, the faculty of law in 1977. He worked as public prosecutor after his study. He was granted a scholarship for abroad study in 1983. He studied also laws in Germany. He obtained a Diploma from the University of Kassel in 1988. He has a doctorate in the comparative criminal law at the University Göttingen in 1989. He practised in a German Law firm in Stuttgart for the area German-Turkey cross boarding issues. He is a co-founder of the Research Instute of European- Turkey Studies in Hamburg. He undertook also a PhD degree at the University of Istanbul in the area of European labour law at the University Istanbul in 1996. He was lecturer for international economic law at the Mediterranean University in Antalya. Dr Dr Altan Heper was a fellow at the research group for Challenges to the Image of Humanity and Human Dignity by New Developments in the Medical Technology at the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research Bielefeld University in 2009/2010. Currently he lectures at the University Würzburg and at the University Tübingen in Germany. His areas of speciality are international business law, aviation law, German law, legal theory of law, legal philosophy, the law of sociology, medical law. His research focuses on the human dignity.

Ayse Nilay Senol

Assistant Professor

Dr. A. Nilay Senol will work as an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Law. Dr. A. Nilay Senol obtained her LLB from Istanbul University Faculty of Law in 2001 and LLM from Marmara University European Union Institute in 2004. She completed her PhD in 2010 at Istanbul University Social Sciences Institute. The title of her thesis is "The Cessation of Distribution Agreements and the Consequences of Cessation". Dr. Senol continues her researches under the Department of Civil Law. She gives civil law lectures at faculty of law.

Emine Karacaoglu

Assistant Professor

Emine Karacaoglu was graduated from University of Dicle in 1987. After the completion of internship at Adana Bar, she started to work at the University of Dicle, Faculty of Law, which was lasted until 2004. She obtained her M.A. from Social Sciences Institute of the Dicle University in 1991 and LLM from University of Nottingham in 1992 and her PhD from Social Sciences Institute of Istanbul University in 2003. She worked at the University of Kocaeli from 2004 to 2012. She teaches constitutional law classes at faculty of law.

H.Bige Açimuz

Assistant Professor

Bige Açimuz received her LL.B. degree from Galatasaray University Law School in 1999. She obtained her LL.M. in Environmental Law and her Ph.D. in Law from Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne University in 2002 and 2011, respectively. Her main research interests include administrative police; liability of the administration; natural, technological and environmental risk management; and urban and environmental planning. She gives administrative law lectures at faculty of law.

Koray Demir

Assistant Professor

Dr. Koray Demir will work as an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Law. Dr. Koray Demir obtained his LL.B. from Ankara University, Faculty of Law in 1999, LL.M. in Economic Law from Bern University, Faculty of Law in 2003 and Ph.D. from Zurich University, Faculty of Law in 2008. After completing his Ph.D. Dr. Demir has worked for national and international companies as legal advisor and he tought inter alia Competition Law, Law of Obligations, Commercial Law and Intellectual Property Rights courses. His research and interest focuses on Competition Law, Practices of Unfair Competition, Company Law, Groups of Companies and Intellectual Property Rights. He gives commercial law lectures at faculty of law.

Nur Zeliha Karan

Assistant Professor

Dr. Nur Karan will work as an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Law. Dr. Nur Karan, completed her high school education in TED Ankara College, after that in 1995 graduated from Istanbul University Faculty of Law. She started to work as a research assistant in Marmara University Faculty of Law Administrative Law section . In 1997, got her master's degree on Public Law at Social Sciences Institute of Marmara University, her thesis titled "Regime of Turkish Forest"; in 2002, got her PhD at the same institute by presenting the thesis titled "Termination of Public Servant Position". She has a book titled "Legal Principles of Licensing in Electricity Market" which was prepeared as post doctorate thesis. Mrs. Karan, lectured Administrative Law, Law of Administrative Procedure, Energy Law, Public Procurement Law, Zoning Law, Public Administration, Law of Local Authorities and Introduction to Law in Marmara University of Law Faculty and the other universities in each degrees. And also have studies about International Arbitration in Administrative Acts, Public Bodies and Competition, Independent Regulatory Agencies, Law of Public Servants, Contribution of Public Service in Energy Markets and Licencing in Electricty Markets etc.

Resat Volkan Günel

Assistant Professor

Resat Volkan Gunel graduated from Kadikoy Anatolian High School in 1999 and from Marmara University Law Faculty in 2003. He was registered as Attorney at Law by Istanbul Bar Association in 2004 and appointed to the Marmara University Law Faculty Department of Public International Law in 2005.

Dr. Gunel spent a semester in Singapore under the scholarship of Roche in 2008, participating in the CLE programme on Asian Approaches to International Law. Afterwards he continued his studies in Heidelberg where was granted a scholarship by the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law in 2009.

Dr. Gunel achieved his PhD Degree on Public Law from Kultur University Institute of Social Sciences in 2010 by submitting the thesis Transformation of Civil Aviation System in the Process of Open Skies Agreements from the Perspective of International Law under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Durmus Tezcan. He has lectured as an Assistant Professor at the Near East University both for the Law School and International Relations Department between 2010 and 2012.

Dr. Gunel who is the first Turkish scholar to give a lecture under the topic of Rethinking the Origins of International Law through the Works of Ibn Khaldun at the 3rd Biennial Conference of the AsianSIL, Beijing in 2011, is currently an Assistant Professor at the Ozyegin University Law School.

Nihat Güman

Yardimci Doçent

Dr. Nihat Güman obtained his B. Sc from the University of Istanbul Faculty of Law in 1997; LLM at the University of Nottingham School of Law in 1999, and PhD at the University of Istanbul Institute of Social Science in 2006. He worked for Turkish Football Federation Arbitration Board as reporter member. He worked at the University of Istanbul Faculty of Law between 1999 and 2012 at the department of Civil procedure and Bankruptcy law and he was member of the department from 2007 to 2012. In addition to Civil Procedure and Bankruptcy law he also teaches, basic principles of law, law for attorney and notary, law for service of process and collection of public credit.

Kerem Öz

Research Assistant

Kerem Öz received his LL.B degree from Yeditepe University Faculty of Law in 2010. He started working as a specialist in Özyegin University Faculty of Law in 2012, after he had completed the law internship period. Kerem Öz continues his studies under the Department of Civil Law.

Alev Dilber

Research Assistant

Alev Dilber, received her LL.B degree from Yeditepe University Faculty of Law in 2012. She started working as a specialist at the department of criminal and criminal procedural law in Özyegin University Faculty of Law. She has researchs on Euthanasia in Turkish Law, Technical Follow Up, Consent, Breach of Confidence, Aggravated Crime Due to the Consequence, Fair trial in Turkish Criminal Law and she has translated various articles from English to Turkish.

Requirements

Foreign students are admitted to the institutions of higher education in Turkey on condition that applicants fulfill the requirements for student admission determined by the relevant institution of higher education and approved by the Council of Higher Education.
The applications from following students will be accepted:

  • foreign students who are either high school graduates or are studying their last year in high school,
  • students with dual nationality who abandoned their Turkish or TRNC citizenship and who complete their entire high school education abroad
  • citizens of TRNC who have completed their entire high school in TRNC and have GCE A/L result

The applications from following students will not be accepted:

  • Turkish citizens,
