The Bachelor of Laws / Bachelor of Science offers students a course focused on commercial law with emphasis on intellectual property lawenforcement. Whilst the only double degree in Victoria on this specialisation, students know about trademarks, patents, copyright, and the prohibition of misleading or deceptive conduct and law. The course also provides an understanding of complex scientific details. Students complete law-related expert experience placements and therefore are introduced into the practical areas of legal training through moot court scenarios along with advocacy exercises. The combination of degrees equips students with the skills to work within the knowledge economy and information tech companies, as patent lawyers, and in legal fields specialising in intellectual property, engineering, and science.

The Job of Laws satisfies the academic requirements for admission to practice as an Attorney in the Australian and Victorian Federal legal systems According to the Victorian Legal Admissions Board. Please be informed that non-academic requirements must also be suited to entry to apply and no law degree enables graduates to practise straight away. Based on the decision of science major, graduates may be eligible to submit an application for membership of relevant professional societies.

  • Year 12 or equivalent
  • VCE prerequisites: Units 3 and 4: a minimum study score of 25 in English (or equivalent) or 30 in English (EAL)
  • And Units 3 and 4: a minimum study score of 20 in any Mathematics. Graduate entrance: A Australian bachelor degree or equivalent in any area, except a Bachelor of Laws (LLB), from a recognised tertiary institution with a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 (out of 4.0)/65%.Additional performance criteria and prerequisite requirements can also apply. English language requirements - satisfactory conclusion of a few of these following: Swinburne's English for Academic Purposes (EAP 5 Advanced level) with overall 70%, each of of skills 65%
  • Minimum IELTS overall band of 6.5 (Academic Module) with no single band below 6.0
  • TOEFL iBT (internet-based) minimum score of 79 with a reading band no less than 18 and writing band no less than 20
  • Pearson (PTE) minimum score of 5-8 (no communicative skills less than 50)
  • Any other equivalent assessment of English language competence. Notice: A prerequisite for several courses, the Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) can currently be done online campus at Hawthorn.
