ESMT's Master's in Management (MIM) bridges your talent and tomorrow's business.

Beginning in September 2014, ESMT will launch an exciting new master's program for beginning professionals who show outstanding potential.

The ESMT Master's in Management program combines applied work in companies with high-quality coursework and research on the latest business management theories. Admitted students have backgrounds in non-business subjects and use the time at ESMT to gain valuable knowledge and interdisciplinary experience on how to apply their expertise to economic and management problems.

The program is designed for students with a backgrounds in STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering, or mathematics), or for students with any first university degree displaying strong interests and advanced abilities in quantitative subjects. The ESMT MIM program uses an interdisciplinary approach: students apply their analytical skills to economic analysis, product development, and new technology management within the global marketplace.

Students complete two internships of up to 6 months each in Germany or abroad. Committed companies so far include Allianz, Axel Springer, BMW, Bosch, Daimler, Deutsche Bank, Deutsche Post DHL, E.ON, Gazprom, McKinsey, Siemens and ThyssenKrupp.

The ESMT MIM concept

Professionals entering today's competitive workplace need advanced skills in analysis and communication to become effective team members. ESMT has conducted extensive research on what organizations need in new employees, how new graduates find jobs, and what students need to achieve their goals. We then built the MIM program to fulfill all of these requirements:

  • What global companies need

Staufenbiel's report on the survey of German companies shows that the need for engineering, science, and business graduates will grow in the next 5 years. But companies need cross-disciplinary knowledge: 57% of companies need business knowledge from their engineering recruits, and 56% of companies need scientific knowledge in their business recruits. Furthermore, over 80% of companies need talented candidates who know how (and can prove in their job applications) to work in high-impact teams, create strategic and creative solutions, deliver dynamic presentations, and communicate effectively in English and German.

ESMT's Master's in Management delivers an integrative approach: students with scientific knowledge gain valuable experience on business analysis and research. Multiple company projects, backed by soft skills training and careers workshops, give students opportunities to learn from experience and gather valuable feedback on their performance. New graduates then have tools to find jobs and deliver competitive results for long-term career growth.

  • Who finds jobs?

Internships and in-company projects remain the most competitive ways of entering a company: 90% of German companies report that in-company work before hiring is one of their preferred ways to fill permanent positions.

ESMT's Master's in Management program allows students to complete three company projects - giving candidates the opportunity to experience multiple company cultures or the chance to further and deepen ties to the company of your choice. Your increased corporate network and new skills will make you competitive on the job market.

  • What students need

To be effective employees and find success as future managers, students need a personal learning environment that emphasizes an individual approach. Traditional university education provides theoretical lectures in giant halls, but after graduation students need to function in high-stress team environments and deliver concise presentations on complex interdisciplinary concepts to be successful over a lifetime.

ESMT's courses integrate applied theory and research in dynamic team learning environments with advanced presentation delivery and foreign language competency. These skills are all ranked by German companies as more important than traditional theoretical lecture knowledge. Furthermore, ESMT's small class sizes, unique personal approach to learning, and emphasis on individual development ensures that students gain a valuable, high-impact education.

MIM program strengths

We've identified four core strengths that make the ESMT Master's in Management unique:

  • Corporate training: ESMT MIM students complete up to 12 months of applied study: an internship, a social impact project, and a thesis project. ESMT has a growing corporate partnership with a variety of global companies for internships and projects.
  • Cutting-edge technology management: The MIM program only accepts students with advanced knowledge of science, mathematics, engineering, or other technical fields. Courses integrate business analysis skills so that graduates can launch new technology on the market and successfully manage technological products on a global scale.
  • International aptitude and social impact: At ESMT, Germany's most international business school, courses are taught by international faculty trained in the world's top institutions. Classes all have an exceptionally diverse student membership. MIM candidates must study either German or a further foreign language. At least 2 months of the program will be abroad. German students are encouraged to spend additional time outside of Germany.
  • Soft skills for high-growth careers: ESMT's small class sizes and applied approach ensures that students gain valuable presentation and high-impact teamwork experience. Further seminars focus on conflict management, diplomatic communication, and other skills likely to be the difference between a graduate's stagnation or promotion.

Career services

Students in the ESMT Master's in Management will benefit from a variety of networking opportunities with companies, including:

  • Career seminars: students will gain insights into long-term career planning, briefings on corporate relations, and other valuable skills-building activities during careers workshops, all integrated into the program schedule and held throughout the program's duration.
  • Internship placement: students will be given access to ESMT's partners when applying for internships. They will also recieve guidance when finding an internship on their own.
  • Thesis projects: students will work in companies on a defined thesis project, following a similar selection process as the internship. Companies offering internships will also offer thesis projects, so students can remain with their company of develop a network in two separate companies.
  • Recruitment and company presentations: recruiting companies may visit the ESMT campus to meet students in group interviews or to conduct on-campus assessments needed for placing students in internships and permanent positions after graduation

The Master's in Management at ESMT is designed to teach students how to take analytical and technological skills, developed in undergraduate work, and use them in an applied business management setting.

ESMT uses an integrative approach, with a combination of traditional coursework, applied internships and projects, career planning and skills workshops, and foreign language training -- all to ensure that students have skills that top German companies repeatedly state they need and want in their organizations.

Foreign language training

In addition to completing the entire program in English, All MIM students study a foreign language. Students have a session devoted to foreign language learning almost every day while on ESMT's campus, with options to continue instruction electronically when working on projects and internships.

For students fluent in German: you will choose a language needed to effectively manage business relationships in the world's fastest growing economies. Possibilities include, but are not limited to, Chinese, Portuguese, and Spanish. There will be up to two languages on offer each year.

For students not fluent in German: you will study German, which allows you to complete internships and projects in German organizations and dramatically increases your competitiveness on the German job market after graduation.

Students are able to practice their foreign languages during their internships, master's thesis, and social project, all or some of which can be in a country that speaks that language.
