The MSc Chemical Engineering focuses on
Students learn in a truly international environment and work together with fellows from other countries, cultures, and backgrounds. Joint work in tutorials, labs, and project groups will broaden their horizon and enable them to interact respectfully in international teams and organisations.
At Ulm University, students will profit from small groups and excellent tutoring during their studies. Additionally, cooperations exist between Ulm University and industry partners as well as research centres such as HIU and ZSW.
Chemical engineers participate in major industrial corporations, small and medium-sized enterprises, and the civil service. Due to broadly based training, chemical engineers match the multifaceted needs of the modern job market. Professional activity is not restricted to the chemical industry, but extends to many associated industries.
- chemical conversion of materials and the related technical processes and equipment
- modern methodological procedures like mathematical modelling of chemical processes
- chemical reaction engineering techniques for energy storage and conversion and related technologies

Educational organisation
We offer an orientation week starting in October (April) each year, including an intercultural introduction to life in Germany and in Ulm.In a three-semester period, lecture courses, seminars, and labs are offered in the fields of chemical engineering, energy science, and technology as well as related fields.
The final semester is reserved for the Master's thesis, which is research-oriented and has a duration of six months (full-time).
Study abroad unit(s)
Students may participate in programmes at partner universities.Internships
An internship (minimum six weeks) in a company of a related field has to be completed.Forms of assessment
Each lecture course concludes with a written or oral exam. In some seminars and labs, students are required to give an oral presentation and/or submit a written report. The Master's thesis is evaluated based on performance during the research period, the written thesis, and an oral presentation.Altogether, the programme consists of 90 credit points for coursework and 30 credit points for the Master's thesis (according to ECTS).
Course objectives
Chemical Engineering is a strongly research-oriented programme. Graduates are well-prepared for work in research and development laboratories in industry or academia focussing on chemical engineering and energy science and technology. Graduates are able to study and work independently and have reached a significant level of intercultural competence.Language requirements
An internationally recognised certification of English language proficiency is required for all students who are not native speakers of English.Minimum requirement:
TOEFL (Internet-based): 95
IELTS: 7
Academic requirements
Entrance requirements are:Proof of a Bachelor's degree with examination results in the study course chemical engineering, any other programme with essentially the same content from any higher education institution in Germany or abroad, or any degree recognised as equivalent awarded after a minimum of three years of study.
Examination results must comply with one of the following criteria: final grade of the Bachelor's degree of 2.5 or better, or examination results showing an average of 2.5 or better by the application deadline if the degree has not yet been completed.
Applicants who do not fulfil the above-average grade and hold a Bachelor's degree with an overall grade of 3.3 or better have to provide their qualification for this Master's programme by an admission examination. This also applies if the Bachelor's programme has not yet been completed and the examination results show an average of 3.3 or better by the application period.
Proof of adequate English language competence must be demonstrated at Level C1 of the Common Framework of Reference for Language (CEF) through the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), through the IELTS, or by any comparable proof.

After the first semester, some student research assistantships are available. In most cases associated with specific research projects, these assistantships are awarded according to personal qualifications of a student. There are also some student jobs available at companies located in the "Science City" adjacent to the university campus. However, work opportunities must be arranged by students themselves.
