Description
Mathematics has proven incredibly useful in just about every field of human endeavour. It is used in science and exploration, in business and government, in industry and forecasting. In the School of Mathematics, you will be taught at the cutting-edge of this rapidly progressing subject.
Your learning experience will be enhanced by the enthusiasm, knowledge and expertise of the research-active lecturers. The BSc Mathematics, our most popular mathematics programme, allows you to develop your interests up to the forefront of pure and applied mathematics. The flexibility we offer will enable you to become specialised in either pure or applied mathematics or to mix your topics. It is possible to transfer from this programme to the four-year integrated Master's (MMath) in Mathematics, subject to strong academic performance.
If you finish your studies with distinction you may want to join our active group of postgraduate students and study for an MSc or PhD degree.

Course Content
Year 1
The main strands of mathematics that we develop in great depth are algebra and calculus. Some of this material follows on naturally from A level courses, while other topics will be new and challenging. Also we give taster modules in mathematical computing and probability, subjects which we assume are new to most students. By the end of their first year students have a much better sense of the breadth and depth of mathematics, than they can discover during A levels for example. Apart from gaining knowledge, mathematics students learn to make statements precise, to understand conventions and start to use the power of methods which have general applications.
The material covered in this year prepares you for the increasingly specialised modules of the honours programme in years 2 and 3. For this reason you do not have any optional modules in your first year.
Years 2 and 3
The second year of your course is a blend of compulsory modules and optional modules,
while in the third year there are no compulsory
courses (see panel). Your marks from year 2 count 40 per cent towards your final degree
result the remaining 60 per cent comes from year 3 assessments. The choice of options in year 2, the wide range of mathematical options in year 3, together with the chance to take modules offered by other UEA Schools of Study allows you to tailor your degree to your particular interests.
