Description

The Medical and Pharmacological Sciences course has a translational scientific ethos designed to provide the skills and knowledge necessary to take a drug from development through to the patient; providing a combined understanding of both the diagnostic techniques utilised in the laboratory and the mechanistic functioning of whole body and cellular systems. The course will give you a sound foundation in several areas of biology that support an understanding of pharmacology.

  • good staff links with a number of pharmaceutical companies including Bristol-Myers Squib, Proctor and Gamble, and Astra Zenica. We also have good collaborative research links with World Precision Instruments;
  • experienced teaching staff who bring their professional and research expertise into their teaching;
  • an extensive suite of analytical and biological laboratories staffed by experienced technicians. These include using state-of-the-art techniques such as
  • flow cytometry, mass spectrometry, high performance liquid chromatography, confocal microscopy, in vitro pharmalogical techniques, and several computer- simulated practical experiments;
  • hands-on experience of a wide range of techniques such as drug screening, toxicity testing and molecular biology;
  • guest speakers in areas such as pharmacogenomics, neuropharmacology, pharmacovigilance and drug transport and drug development;
  • graduates of this course can expect to earn a starting salary of £20-25k*

Course Content

The first year lays the foundation for the study of Medical and Pharmacological Sciences. You will develop key study and research skills through topics including; physiology, microbiology, cell biology, molecular biology and pharmacology.

In the second year you will further develop your study skills and research expertise and will begin to specialise in pharmacology and related areas such as physiology, biochemistry, immunology and genetics.

The final year of your course gives you the opportunity to carry out an independent research project in an area of pharmacology as well as in depth study of advanced pharmacology and drug development, cancer biology, chemotherapy and genetics.

Your course will be based on a series of lectures, with associated seminars, workshops, practical classes and personal tutorials - as well as problem based learning.

Access: The Access Diploma to include 30 Level 3 credits at Merit and to include 15 Level 3 Merits in specified subject units * e.g. Biology, Sport Science etc. Access applicants can meet GCSE requirements through their current studies and do not need to have these qualifications separately.

  • International Baccalaureate Diploma: 27 points to include Biology at Higher level

Merit Scholarship Scheme

Merit Scholarship scheme: £1,000, in year one only and based on academic performance.

  • Available to all international students applying for full-time undergraduate and postgraduate programmes at Coventry University.
  • Scholarships are allocated on the basis of academic merit. (Postgraduate applicants must hold 2.1 or equivalent, undergraduate applicants must hold A-levels or equivalent at grades BBC)
  • There is no separate scholarship application process: all undergraduate applications from self-funded international students from any non-EU country and postgraduate applications from international, will automatically be considered for a merit award. You will not have to do anything, if you are successful you will be notified in due course by the International Office.
