Nutrition and Food Science

This course incorporates fundamental sciences linked to individual food and nutrition science with working experience to ensure that graduates are uniquely placed to contribute to global wellness and health. Students understand how food and nutrition can affect the wellbeing and health of global populations by recognizing the science behind foods and the use of nutrition in health. The first half of this degree investigates fundamental sciences associated with food and human nutrition. The next year builds on these foundations while also researching the ramifications of nutritional supplements on health and human development across the life span, food chemistry and food processing. Students will appraise the most recent scientific literature from the fields of food and nutrition science and link this to improvements in the discipline area. In the last half of this degree students will choose between two classes; food or nutrition science. Government organisations and the food industry produce a higher demand for students in a selection of areas, including public health, nutrition education programs, nutrition information, research linked to food and nutrition in health and disease, and the development of fresh foods. Potential employers include health departments, community and public health centres, welfare businesses and non-government agencies, food suppliers and manufacturers, teaching associations, and national and state research labs. Graduate nutritionists often tackle an additional two-year program of study in a particular professional area, such as dietetics, food science and technology, health marketing or instruction.
