he oil and gas engineering program builds on the basic science and technology subjects common to all engineering disciplines. Engineers in this field gain a sound understanding of geological principles and learn to integrate them with the principles of energy and mass conservation and thermodynamics. You'll take courses in reservoir, petroleum production, drilling, well logging and formation evaluation, well testing, oil field safety and environmental impacts, improved recovery techniques, and oil and gas treating processes; these provide knowledge of the basic technologies associated with oil and gas engineering. You'll also work with computers and technology, as they play a major role in oil and gas engineering. Engineers must integrate geological data with production data in order to understand the past performance and to predict the future performance of a given reservoir.Calgary is known as the "engineering capital of Canada" and the Schulich internship is the largest of its kind in the country. Students have the option of making this a five year program by participating in a 12 - 16 month internship after the third year to make contacts, get experience, and offset the costs of education. International placements expand horizons even further.
