The Master's course is based on a solid Bachelor's degree obtained in physics or related science fields with sufficient knowledge of physics. Teaching in the Master's course focuses on two major physical fields, which participants can choose from among: functional nano-systems, non-linear physics, photonics and magnonics, material physics, solid state physics in restricted dimensions, nuclear and particle physics. In addition, a non-physical subject must be chosen from the vast selection offered by a full university, e.g. computer science, biophysics, geophysics, German language, mathematics, philosophy, psychology, and many more.

Educational organisation

The first year of the programme is devoted to lectures in small learning groups, experimental and theoretical exercises, lab courses and seminars. The second year is reserved for students' own research, the Master's project, which is conducted in one of the many research groups of the faculty under the supervision of leading scientists in their respective fields.

Study abroad unit(s)

Not obligatory, but possible; the faculty offers organised contacts with universities in France, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom.

Internships

None obligatory

Forms of assessment

Oral exams, evaluation of lab reports and seminar presentations. In total, the Master's course comprises a total of 120 ECTS.

Course objectives

Successful graduates of the Master's programme have acquired the competence to conduct applied or fundamental research and to take on challenging tasks in industrial research and development. In two important research fields, students obtain sufficient detailed knowledge to be able to take part in cutting-edge research. Designing experiments, developing complex computer programmes, presenting talks, writing scientific reports or articles and cooperating within a research team are key capabilities which are developed in independent work during an extended research project.

Language requirements

Candidates must provide proof of their German or English skills. German: TestDaF 3, DSH 1 or Level B2 or equivalent. English: Level B2 or equivalent
