StudyQA ranking:2943 Duration:2 years
The Master of Science in general physics aims at providing a profound, research-oriented education in physics as well as a general knowledge of the most relevant scientific methods.
Obligatory core lectures allow students to deepen their previous knowledge of physics, while elective courses lead to a specialisation in one of the following fields of physics: biophysics and soft matter, condensed matter physics and nanoscience, econophysics, plasma physics, quantum information and technologies.
The course syllabus at Master's level is strongly connected to ongoing research at the Physics Department. Students have the opportunity to experience forefront scientific research in an international academic environment.

Educational organisation

The Master's programme has a modular structure; each student can configure the study plan according to personal preferences and inclinations.
In the first year, obligatory core lectures are to be attended and combined with specialisation and elective courses. The students will carry out experiments chosen from the advanced physics lab.
The second year of the Master's programme is dedicated to gaining thorough knowledge of academic research. Students undertake research in the specialisation of their choice and conduct an independent scientific project. The final semester is reserved for the Master's thesis, which is research-oriented and has a duration of six months.

Study abroad unit(s)

Students may participate in programmes at partner universities.

Forms of assessment

Written or oral final exam. For advanced seminars and labs, students are required to give an oral presentation and submit a written report.
Altogether, the programme comprises 60 ECTS points for coursework, 30 ECTS points for the research projects and 30 ECTS points for the Master's thesis.

Course objectives

The Master of Science in general physics is a strongly research-oriented programme which enables graduates to work in research and development as demanded by laboratories in both academia and industry.
Master's students will be well prepared for a career in various interdisciplinary fields such as nanotechnology, energy and information technology, materials science, medicine, and finance.

Language requirements
