To be accepted into the masters programme in Physics, you need to complete a relevant bachelor programme.

The study of Physics deals with phenomena from the smallest elementary particles to cosmos. Between these extremes are atoms, molecules, compounds and liquids with a multitude of properties which physicists describe and utilise. Last, but not least, there is an important mediation aspect, both within and outside the various institutions of education.

Research
The Department of Physics and Chemistry at University of Southern Denmark focus their research on:

Focus your education

You combine this programme with a research profile which allows you to specialise in a specific scientific area.

In the masters programme in Physics, you work with a range of advanced subjects and your thesis.

Already in the first year of the programme (fourth year of study), you get the posibility to focus on the type of career and area of physics which you are most interested in, such as:

* Surface physics
* Statistical physics
* Biophysics
* High energy physics

Through working on your thesis, you have the opportunity to contribute new knowledge. One or more of the department employees will supervise you and you will also have the opportunity to develop your thesis in collaoration with outside researchers.

Research degree
The masters programme in Physics can be built upon through a research degree, the PhD. The 3-year PhD programme is centered around a research project and along the way you also take advanced courses and teach younger students.

Research in the Department of Physics and Chemistry

The department values the fundamental scientific research in a broad range of subjects from Physics and Chemistry to related disciplines like Biophysics and Nano-bioscience. Theory, computer calculations and experiments are brought into play to create new results and techniques to benefit both science and technique.
The Department of Physics and Chemistry has four core research fields:

The department is among the best in the world in research of modified DNA as well as research in the physcis of biomembranes which help us deliver medicine aimed at infected cells in the body. The Department of Physics and Chemistry also holds several of Europes key assets in work with chemical and physical methods of emulating fundamental processes of life.

Physics with a research profile

In the masters programme in Physics with a research profile, you get the opportunity to immerse yourself in current issues and complete your own research projects. The programme will provide you with a good basis for handling complex problems which are relevant in many different careers.
Graduates who have completed this master programme are entitled to use the title of Master of Science (MSc) in Physics.

Programme structure
In the field of Physics, the Department of Physics and Chemistry offers a full degree two-year programme for international students, the MSc in Physics research profile.
The programme is strongly oriented towards theoretical and experimental Physics and enables you to excel in your preferred area of expertise.
All courses in the programme are taught and examined in English.

PhD programme

If your desire and abilities suffice, you can choose to apply for a research degree. This can be either as a 3-year programme following the masters programme or as a 4-year programme beginning a year after the bachelor programme. The research programme leads to a PhD in science.

Language entry requirementsA good standard of English is required because teaching at the University involves student participation, class discussion, project work and student presentations. Physics master courses are taught in English on demand. Students with bachelor's degrees from countries outside Switzerland or the European Union * Students with a bachelor' degree or other degrees based on at least three years of higher education after high school level * Qualifications in Physics and Mathematics corresponding to a bachelor degree in Physics from a well-respected institution * Satisfactory results from the Graduate Record Examination in Physics (see for further details) Only students with the above qualifications can be accepted. Danish Government Scholarship - Ministry of Science, Innovation and Higher Education
The Danish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Higher Education has launched a scholarship programme for students from non-EU/EEA countries studying a full degree at graduate level. Scholarships and tuition fee waivers are available for highly talented students who have been admitted to a range of programmes.

The board of the University of Southern Denmark decides from year to year which study programmes will benefit from the scholarships and the University will recommend the most qualified applicants in these programmes for a scholarship. Therefore it is not possible to apply for this scholarship. If you are a non-EU student and applying for a programme which offers this scholarship you will automatically be considered for it.

BHJ ScholarshipOnly available for students applying for a master programme at our Sønderborg CampusSix one-year scholarships are issued pr. year: three for studies within the technical field i.e. Mechatronics and Innovation & Business, IT Product Design respectively, and three are for studies within the field of business administration i.e. Business Relationship Management.

A scholarship of DKK 40.000 may be granted if and when the requirements are met. It is paid in two instalments of DKK 20.000 per semester. The scholarship grant depends on acceptance and enrolment as a full-time student in one of the above mentioned programmes.
