Course Content

What will you study?

As a primary school teacher you are expected to demonstrate a sound knowledge of all the subjects in the curriculum for Key Stages 1 and 2. You will study the core subjects of English, Mathematics and Science throughout the degree. Art, PE, RE, Geography, Design Technology and History provide a curriculum balance for the other three subjects to be studied at depth. ICT also features heavily within the course.

In Year 3, you can choose to specialise on a school experience at either Key Stage 1 or 2. In the final semester you also have the opportunity to study abroad in Australia, USA or Europe.

Requirements

We require a minimum of 300 UCAS tariff points from a minimum of two and maximum of three A-levels, one of which should be a National Curriculum subject (AS level may be considered in some cases).

We can only accept Access to Higher Education courses, that have 'primary teaching' as a key component of the course, for example Access to Primary Teaching' or 'Access to Teacher Training'. For any other Access to Higher Education courses you will need to show that it has 'primary teaching' as a key component of it.

We will consider BTEC Extended Diploma, but only if it has National Curriculum content in it.

We can also consider the following CACHE diplomas:

  • Level 3 diploma in Childcare and Education
  • Level 3 extended diploma for Children's care learning and development
  • Level 3 extended diploma for Children and Young People's workforce.

GCSE requirements

You must have GCSEs Grade C or above in English, Maths and Science or be retaking them this year. We also accept the equivalency tests by , or any other appropriately accredited provider. We cannot accept functional skills or key skills.

Other requirements

It is essential that you have two weeks work experience in a public school in the UK or Republic of Ireland primary context, before you start the programme. Kindly note that you are required to have some experience in the primary school before coming for interview. To begin the course you must also complete a satisfactory DBS check and an Occupational Health check.

Important note for all applicants regarding skills tests

Prior to commencing the course, you must pass Department for Education professional skills tests in numeracy and literacy. You should submit an application as early as possible via UCAS and if invited for interview, then make arrangements to book and take the skills tests as soon as possible. We strongly advise that you book and pass the test before the interview as that will give you the best possible chance of success. However if you haven't passed at the time of the interview, your offer will be conditional on passing the tests by a nominated date.Please see
