What does being a social worker in the twenty-first century involve? A recent report called for social work professionals to become more autonomous and critically reflective - and these elements are at the heart of this programme. As a result, our social work graduates are skills, knowledgeable and innovative, giving them the qualities they need for successful careers.

As a social worker, you could find yourself helping parents care for their children, assissting young adults to lead independent lives or helping people with mental health problems. We're looking for candidates who have the motivation, personal qualities and commitment to meet the demands of the profession.

This is a four-year, full-time programme that's designed to allow you to qualify as a social worker. As a results, you'll become eligible for professional registration with the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) and other UK Care Councils.

There are many employment opportunities for graduates, in a number of different settings within the profession. These include local authorities (in areas like children and families teams, criminal justice, mental health and community care), as well as both the voluntary and private sectors/

Some points to consider before applying include:
- Personal statements on applications should be well written, provide adequate detail regarding your understanding of and motivation to study social work specifically.
- Candidates must have experience in social care/social work. There is no minimum requirement for experience and it can be voluntary or paid work. For school leavers this could include involvement in a buddying or mentoring scheme. Befriending work within a voluntary or paid capacity is acceptable for all applicants. HNC placement on it's own is not sufficient.

Course Content

Year 1: Foundation for social work practice.

Year 2: Context of social work practice.

Year 3: Frameworks for social work practice.

Year 4: Readiness for practice.

Work placement: Students will undertake a total of three practice placements during the four year programme. The first is an observational placement in Year 1 of the programme. In Year 3 the student will undertake a 65 day practice placement and in Year 4 a 90 day placement.

Assessment: A variety of assessment methods are used including written assignments group presentations and a written practice portfolio.
