The Master in Sociology is a one-year, English-taught program containing 60 ECTS credits. The program focuses on the sociological analysis of problems of social cohesion in contemporary Western societies, from both a micro perspective (family, social networks, crime) and from a macro perspective (welfare state, solidarity). Questions dealt with include:
* What are peoples attitudes about welfare rights for minority groups in society, such as immigrants, and what factors can explain these attitudes?
* Does a countrys social security system effect solidarity with ones fellow citizens?
* Do people increasingly act individually, and does the existence of and involvement in social media compensate for this?
* How can we explain the growth of political cynicism?
* What social groups are more involved in crime?
* Are certain social groups more involved in crime than others?
The Masters program has a theoretical and empirical research focus. This means that social problems and issues are translated into sociological research questions, which are then analyzed using sociological theories, models, advanced research methods and statistical techniques. In addition to this, students will then learn how policy solutions can be derived from the results of this sociological analysis, and to evaluate the implementation of these solutions.
The broad and in-depth knowledge acquired during your Sociology studies will enable you to make a substantial contribution to the analysis and solution of today's social problems.
The program consists of 60 Credits (ECTS), equivalent to 1680 hours of study, divided into four units. The third and fourth units are reserved entirely for writing your Masters Thesis.
