This is a new international masters program at Roskilde University starting on 1st September 2014. The program engages with consumption design, designed sites and design processes from a societal perspective. The program focuses on relationships between people, objects and places paying particular attention to peoples diverse practical and symbolic relationships to design and designed sites. This nexus is unfolded in relation to mobility, consumption and experiences in both production (design processes) and consumption (the purchase and use of things and places).

The distinctive features of the Masters in Spatial Design and Society are:

* It cuts across traditional academic boundaries within the social sciences (sociology, anthropology and social geography) at the same time as integrating design science and practical media studies and technical know-how;
* It examines design and design processes in situ and in actu, i.e. the places where they are used and designed;
* It provides a unique spatial understanding of design and a unique design perspective on the spatial organization of society.
* It systematically teaches students to combine depth analysis with practical and creative usability;
* It gives students the skills to become consultants that can make social scientific analyses of design processes and who can also understand how consumption design, and designed sites, are experienced and used by humans.

1st semester
Design objects and designed sites from the consumer's perspective

The aim of this semester is to study design objects and designed sites from the consumers perspective. The semester examines design in relation to consumption, experiences and mobility with the focus being on studying design objects and designed sites. The semester consists of three courses and a project:

Ethnography, Spatial Analysis and Visualization 1

This is a methods course that provides an advanced introduction to and hence knowledge about the main methods used on the program: ethnography, spatial analysis and visualization.

Consumption and Use of Design

This is a purely theoretical course. It provides the knowledge and skills necessary for analyzing and theorizing about human relationships to consumption objects and places.

Experiences, Mobility and Designed Places

This course combines theory with practical exercises where the students learn to integrate theories and empirical studies. Exam form: Photo Essay, ethnographic film or interactive maps.

Semester project work includes the following module requirements: Article relying on a limited, concentrated field work in relation to a specific object or place of experience, consumption and/or mobility.

2nd semester
Design processes and social change

In this semester students study design processes and social change. The students learn to study how the design processes, the actors, practices, networks, systems and social conditions play a role in the genesis and the commercial deployment (or rejection) of a design in its spatial context. The semester consists of three courses and a project:

Design as a Socio-Technical System

This is a purely theoretical course. The course focuses on design as a socio-technical system involving a variety of actors, global value chains and material relations.

Design Processes and Entrepreneurship

This course concerns theory (based on economic anthropology, economic sociology and economic geography) which is combined with practical exercises about design processes and entrepreneurship.

Optional methods course on another subject at Roskilde University.

3rd semester
Design in practice

This semester deals with the design in practice. The students learn to combine the thinking gained from two perspectives presented during the first year (consumption in the 1st semester and design processes/production in the 2nd semester). They do so in a specific practical analysis and thereby develop analytical and practical skills necessary to act as design consultants who can contribute constructively to using their knowledge about design processes. The semester consists of three courses and a project:

Live Cases - is a practical course undertaken in cooperation with leading design companies. It will be based on real-life cases, and the companies are involved in the actual teaching.

Ethnography, Spatial Analysis and Visualization 2

An optional methods course on another subject at Roskilde University.

Project work

4rd semester
Thesis (30 ECTS)

The purpose of the thesis (30 ECTS) is to make the student capable of identify, define and outline an applicable thesis, sum up the original reading list which is relevant for the thesis and implement a thorough study of the construct within Spatial Designs and Society. Complete a thorough and precise report of the accomplished studies and present the results and analyses in accordance with general scientific standards. Critically analyse and interpret, discuss and assess the data in relation with relevant academic terms and theories. Be able to discuss and put into perspective the results of the project work in a larger scientific and social connection.

The general requirements for admission to the masters programme are: A bachelor degree equivalent to a Danish bachelor degree within the field of study of the masters programme. Students who wish to apply for a combination masters programme must have an educational background which is relevant to both subjects of the combination. If this is not the case the student, if generally qualified, will be required to do prerequisite studies at bachelor level within the subjects for which the student is not fully qualified. English Language Requirements IELTS band: 6.5 TOEFL paper-based test score : 550 TOEFL iBT® test: 80
