This one-year Master Programme in Tourism Destination Development combines theoretical knowledge with experience of application and practical use. Students become acquainted with and take part in ongoing research projects and issues relevant for the development of both international tourism destinations and regional tourism destinations in Dalarna. The aim of the programme is for students to achieve a broad understanding of the opportunities and limitations that come with developing tourism destinations in a sustainable way.

Who should study Tourism Destination Development?

Successful candidates to the programme are those who are interested in working with sustainable destination development and thus becoming a part of the fast-growing international tourism industry. The programme is suitable for students with a bachelor's degree with a major in Tourism Studies, Business Administration and Management, Human Geography, Economics, or similar fields. Documented good command of both oral and written English is required.

Tourism Destination Development: Career and Study Opportunities

After graduating from this programme, students may work in the tourism industry with destination planning and marketing, both in businesses and in public organizations. Former students mainly find work in destination marketing organizations in different countries, at hotels and in activity companies, as well as within local and regional tourism-planning organizations.

Upon completion of the programme, students may also apply for a PhD position within Tourism Studies or similar fields at any Swedish university. They may also apply for a full 'Bologna' Master at some of our partner universities in Europe.

The programme is a one-year master's in Tourism Studies. All courses are taught in English. After passing all courses, including the thesis work, the student is awarded the Degree of Master of Arts with a major in Tourism Studies. The programme comprises 60 credits (1 credit = 1 ECTS) and begins at the end of August, which is the start of the autumn semester.

Semester 2 (Spring) - Late January to Mid-June

  • Theory and Research Methods (KG3008) / 15
  • Degree Thesis in Tourism (TR3007) / 15

Bachelor’s degree majoring in Human Geography, Business Administration and Management, Tourism Studies, Economics or an equivalent degree. Scholarships

There are a number ofscholarships available for successful applicants to the Tourism Destination Development Programme who are applying from non-EU/EEA countries.
Students from the following countries are not eligible for these scholarships: Bangladesh, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Cambodia, Kenya, Mali, Mozambique, Rwanda, Uganda and Zambia.

Applicants from these countries may apply for Swedish Institute scholarships.

Value of Scholarships

Up to 18 scholarships available that cover 25% of tuition fees for one year (60 credits).

Up to 7 scholarships available that cover 50% of tuition fees for one year (60 credits).
