A PhD in Law takes the form of the Monash Doctoral Program – a PhD for the 21st century. At the core of the program is an extensive, independent research project on an agreed chosen topic, supported by at least two expert academic supervisors. Your study will result in a research thesis or alternative approved output, which makes a valuable contribution to the current body of knowledge on your chosen topic. The research component is enhanced by professional development activities that provide you with the skills required to make an impact in academia, industry, government or the wider community.

A PhD in Law requires you to complete a research thesis of up to 80,000 words (or alternative approved outputs), which must be of a standard comparable to the legal writings found in scholarly law journals. The thesis must demonstrate an ability to undertake independent research and to analyse and synthesise legal concepts.

The Doctor of Philosophy program may be undertaken in any area of research, including:

    • Commercial law
    • Comparative law
    • Criminal law
    • Administrative law
    • eLaw
    • Family law
    • Health law
    • Human rights law
    • Environmental law
    • Equity and property law
    • Intellectual property law
    • International trade law
    • Public law
    • Torts

The staff expertise webpage has an extensive list of the current research areas within Monash Law.

As well as the research component, you will also complete a series of professional development activities or coursework units relevant to your chosen research focus. These activities are designed to provide you with the skills needed to develop your professional skills to support you in your future career.

    Australia requirements for international students

In Australia each institution has its own application procedures and admission requirements so il would be better to contact your chosen university for an application form. To study here you'll need to apply for both admission to an institution and also for a student visa from the Australian Government so it's necessery to carefully check student visa information on the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP).

Entry requirements can include: the academic requirements, evidence of funds to support your study and overseas student health cover. The academic requirements you need to study in Australia depend on the level of education you want to study. Indeed, in some cases, you may need to present your results of an English language test.

You can choose up to six courses in your application. Each university you've applied to consider your application separately. This means that you may receive an offer from each course that you include in your application.
