The Master of Engineering in VLSI Systems is designed to equip students with a detailed knowledge of the design, fabrication and test of VLSI Systems. It will appeal to students with a science or engineering background who wish to change their career focus and move into the microelectronics industry.

The course is offered in two modes, part-time and full-time (subject to demand). The part-time mode facilitates students currently in employment. It is a block-release course over four academic terms, spanning two years. The full-time course spans a single academic year, and requires full-time attendance on campus. Both versions have the same academic content.

Objectives

The course provides a comprehensive founding in the theory of microelectronic systems, as well as exposure to state of the art design techniques and toolsets.

Careers

The Masters in VLSI Systems is designed to address the shortage of graduates skilled in both digital and analogue VLSI systems design. Graduates from the course are well placed to take up rewarding careers in the VLSI industry, including IC design, manufacturing and test, as well as research into future developments in the VLSI area.

The course consists of a taught component and a project.

Semester 1

ASICS 1 (Digital), Test Engineering 1, Semiconductor Technology, Project 1. Choose 2 from the following: Digital Signal Processing, Information Theory & Coding, Advanced Digital System Design
Semester 2

ASICS 2 (Analogue), Test Engineering 2, Noise in Circuits & Systems, Project 2. Choose 2 from the following: Digital Control, Digital Communications, Host & Network Security, Advanced Topic Seminars,

The principal entry requirement for either course is an honours primary degree in a numerate discipline. An interview may be part of the admission process.ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTSAs all international students are required to possess sufficient language skills to attend lectures and sit examinations at the University of Limerick, students should be competent to communicate through the medium of English prior to their arrival.Students must have a minimum score of 550 (paper based) or 213 (computer based) 80 (internet based) in TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or an IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score in the range of 6.5-7 and not less than 6.0 in any one component.
