What is this degree about?
The mission of the program is to train professionals skilled in basic geographic research methods and tools for spatial decision-making in corporate and governmental management.n So, this program aims to prepare a new generation of environmentally aware students for graduate employment in a range of industries positioned to tackle these global grand challenges. Plus, it provides a broad understanding of these processes from a physical geography perspective with a strong focus on quantitative analysis and modeling approaches. In a world that is increasingly affected by environmental change, it is of paramount importance that we are able to develop sustainable management of energy and natural resources, food security, biodiversity, ecology, and natural hazards. Tackling these themes requires a broad and interdisciplinary approach, based on a sound understanding of Earth and environmental processes, and of the intersection of human pressures and ecological systems. You’ll take a mix of geography, science, environment, and math courses. And, perhaps most important of all, students will have ample time for discussion of critical issues in natural resources and sustainability, environmental policy, and society.
Students learn to integrate scientific theories, findings, and procedures for analyzing and modeling human-environmental systems. In addition, the specialization of scientific key skills such as scientific writing and presenting, the analysis of primary literature as well as special language skills in English is a major qualification goal. The competencies for dealing with questions of global change and sustainable transformation are provided by applying a wide range of teaching and assessment modes such as classical classroom teaching, virtual lessons, research-guided project work, intense research seminars, and fieldwork.
After the graduate, students should be able to discern sound science from biased claims and will have a foundation for making informed decisions about sustainable practices in their own lives.
