Bayreuth, the city of world-famous composer Richard Wagner, is located in southern Germany. The city is the capital of Upper Franconia, a region in northern Bavaria halfway between Berlin and Munich, or Frankfurt and Prague. Bayreuth is a lively city of culture and science with a population of about 75,000. The flair of its 800-year-old history, Franconian charm, architectural monuments from the Baroque period, a medium-sized economy, and numerous international contacts shape its character. During the annual Richard Wagner Opera Festival, Bayreuth transforms into a stage for highly acclaimed stars of classical music from all over the world. A wide range of restaurants, pubs, cafés, and beer gardens invite newcomers to acquaint themselves with the remarkable specialities of the regional cuisine and the various beers of Franconia. Leisure activities and sports facilities are to be found in abundance on campus and in town. Nearby are two of Germany's most attractive recreational areas, the Fränkische Schweiz and the Fichtelgebirge.
The International Office with its Service for International Students (SIS) assists students before and upon arrival (mailing of information, pick-up service from the station). It offers assistance in all administrative matters including registration and enrolment.
