Cities are the locations of issues and opportunities, injustice and solidarity, and community and conflict. Processes of urbanization shape the challenges and possibilities of the 21st century. The Urban Studies Program equips students to analyze the city and urban life through a variety of disciplinary lenses drawn from the humanities and social sciences, applying both qualitative and quantitative methods for scholarly research and community engagement.Urban studies are devoted to the interdisciplinary study of cities, concentrating on the urban fabric as well as the culture, society, and economics that are unique to cities and to individuals who live there.

Why Urban Studies?

Around 70% of the world's population is projected to reside in urban areas by 2050, compared to 55% who do so now. Numerous social and economic benefits are presented, but there are also enormous obstacles associated with urban growth. As a participant in our Urban Studies programs, you will acquire the theoretical knowledge and practical abilities required to meet the challenges of urban living.

Urban Studies is a multi-disciplinary field of study that offers students an in-depth understanding of cities, the processes that give rise to them, and their social and environmental consequences. Urbanization happens at a scale and pace never seen before in human history. To understand society today, you need to study Urban Studies.

Bachelor's programs Urban Studies

Students investigate the development and history of cities, suburban and urban expansion and change, constructed, social, and natural environment organization and design, urban politics and policy, and the impact of cities and urbanization on the arts, culture, and public life. In order to understand how different communities have shaped cities over time, the undergraduate program places a strong emphasis on both global and local perspectives. It also looks into the spatial dimensions of social relations and cultural meaning, and it pushes students to work toward inclusive, equitable, and sustainable places.

You will examine a variety of urban concerns in this English-taught bachelor's program, working both in the classroom and in the city itself. By studying the theory of urban development, city development, and anticipated future developments, you will lay a strong academic basis. Additionally, you will work on actual urban challenges throughout the program. You will create solutions for real urban problems that are relevant to policy in collaboration with our nonacademic partners and stakeholders.

Master's programs Urban Studies

Urban sociology, economic geography, urban and regional planning, and urban geography are all combined in the Research Master's in Urban Studies to give an interdisciplinary and thorough approach to researching urban transformation, as well as the opportunities and difficulties this provides. Through a curriculum and pedagogical approach that incorporates interdisciplinary breadth as well as depth in fundamental areas of knowledge, skill, and practice, students learn to confront such difficulties.

The programs' goals are to increase students' understanding of urban studies and to equip them to take part in research or qualified urban development investigations. It is intended for people who have a sincere interest in cities, urban life, and all urban-related manifestations. The programs' approaches and skill-teaching techniques make them especially well-suited for pupils who aren't afraid to experiment and explore.

Career after degree

Students who major in Urban Studies may go on to pursue careers in the private and corporate sectors, civil service, the not-for-profit sector, and education sector. People with interests in public policy, social work, community and international development, planning and architecture, heritage and tourism, consultancy and marketing, real estate, and infrastructure management will find urban studies to be a good fit.

You will be qualified to work with issues of city development in a variety of organizations once you have completed your studies. Working on projects across many industries, from governmental bodies to businesses, may be required. You could hold a position as a project manager, coordinator, or researcher. Businesses, government agencies, and organizations that deal with buildings, cities, and regions may be your future jobs.
