Bangor University (Welsh: Prifysgol Bangor) is a Welsh university in the city of Bangor in the county of Gwynedd in North Wales. It received its Royal Charter in 1885 and was one of the founding member institutions of the former federal University of Wales. It was officially known for most of its history as the University of Wales, Bangor (UWB) (Welsh: Prifysgol Cymru, Bangor). From September 2007 it became known as Bangor University, having become independent from the federal University of Wales.
In 2012 Bangor was ranked 251st among the world's top universities. According to the Sunday Times University Guide 2012, it is rated top in Wales for teaching excellence and is among the top 15 universities in the UK in this category.
Academic and research excellence

Bangor University’s research has a major impact around the world according to the latest assessment of research quality, the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014. The REF recognised that more than three-quarters of Bangor’s research is either world-leading or internationally excellent, ahead of the average for UK universities. Over half of Bangor’s academic Schools have been ranked in the UK top 20 for quality of research.
Bangor University is top in Wales in the most recent measure of student satisfaction (National Student Survey 2014), and is in the top 10 of the UK’s best non-specialist universities, the traditional institutions who offer a broad range of subjects.
Range of Expertise
The University is made up of five Colleges housing twenty-two academic Schools, as well as over fifty specialist research centres, enabling the provision of over 150 postgraduate courses spanning the Arts, Humanities and Sciences.

Our Early Researcher Development Programme (ERDP) provides training and workshops that will help you develop and maintain the key research, vocational and entrepreneurial skills necessary to meet the demands of your future career.
Students from 70 countries choose to study at Bangor every year and make up over 10% of the total student poulation. Amongst these 70 countries, we have students from Taiwan, South Korea, Kenya, Ghana, Pakistan, Mexico and numerous European countries.
