The University of Tyumen (UTMN) is the first university in Tyumen region founded back in 1930. Nowadays UTMN consists of 15 institutes. The total number of students at the university is more than 21,000, including more than 2,100 international students.

UTMN trains qualified specialists in 175 fields. UTMN offers various forms of study: full-time, part-time, distance education, undergraduate programmes, graduate programmes, pre-doctorate education, advanced training, and second degree. The University of Tyumen is one of the participants of the Project 5-100 – the program of improving international competitiveness of top Russian universities among the world’s leading research and education centers. Since 2013 Valeri Falkov has been the rector of UTMN.

The development of universal primary education created a desperate need for professional teaching staff, for which reason in 1930 the first Tyumen higher educational institution was founded. Students of the Agricultural and Pedagogical Institute of Tyumen could study agriculture, chemistry, biology and physics.

The second half of 1930s saw the start of academic research. In 1935, an experimental plot was created. Scientific expeditions to the north of the Altai, studies of indigenous northern language and folklore and regional teaching courses for locals took place from 1936-1940.

Everything changed with the start of World War II in July 1941. During its first year, more than a hundred of students, professors and other staff members went to the front. Nevertheless, the Institute continued working. In February 1942, it hosted an academic conference where 20 papers in the fields of mathematics, chemistry, geography, psychology, literature, Russian language and anti-fascism were presented. Among the participants were scientists from Boris Zbarsky’s laboratory came to Tyumen with the mummy of Lenin that was being evacuated from Moscow. 

In the 1960's, the fast development of West Siberian oil and gas industry influenced the Institute, which focused on finding the most effective ways of oil and gas extraction. On January 1, 1973, by the decision of the USSR Council of Ministers, the Pedagogical Institute became a State University. The first rector of the University became a doctor of Physics and Mathematics, Igor Aleksandrov.

Thanks to the first international agreement on cooperation, signed in 1988 with Lakehead University (Canada), UTMN becomes a member of the International Association of Circumpolar Universities. The International Higher School of Banking is being created with the support of the European Union, the International Institute of Finance, Management and Business is being opened, the Open Law School begins to work on the basis of the University of Tyumen. 

Today the Univrsity of Tyumen is in the TOP-20 among Russia's best universities. The university created new educational structures: Polytechnic School, School of Advanced Studies, X-BIO (Institute of Environmental and Agricultural Biology). Fundamental changes are occurring in the education system. The new educational model of the university involves the introduction of individual educational trajectories. In 2017 UTMN became one of the best universities in the international ranking “QS University Rankings: Developing Europe and Central Asia (EECA)” for the first time.

Document Checklist

In order to successfully apply and enroll to the University of Tyumen, you will need to prepare a set of documents. This might depend on the program you are applying for:

Foundation program

• Passport (must be valid for at least 1,5 years since the supposed date of your arrival) – scanned copy
• Previous academic certificate – scanned copy 
• Transcript of records for your previous academic certificate – scanned copy
• Motivation letter 

Degree program

• Passport (must be valid for at least 1,5 years since the supposed date of your arrival) – scanned copy
• Previous academic certificate – original
• Transcript of records for your previous academic certificate – original  
• HIV certificate - original
• 4 passport sized photos

When you are submitting the Online Application Form, you do not need to have your documents translated and legalized. But once you received your Offer of Admission, you can start preparing your documents for enrollment. Moreover, if you are not planning to return to your country upon the completion of the Foundation Program and before the start of the degree program, it is better to complete all the procedures before you arrive to Russia.

Translation

All documents issued in a language, other than Russian, should have a certified translation into Russian prior to enrollment. You can make a certified translation at the Russian Embassy/ Consulate or at a translation center. 

Legalization

Depending on the country of issue of your documents, they might be subject to the procedure of legalization. Legalization is the process of authenticating / certifying a legal document so that it would be valid abroad. This can be done at a Russian Consulate abroad or by the local authority in your country. Recognition

In case there is no bilateral agreement on mutual recognition of educational documents between the Russian Federation and the country of issue of your document, then it is subject to the procedure of recognition. This can be done by the Main State Center for Education Evaluation (http://www.nic.gov.ru/en).
