School of Aviation
The School of Aviation was established in 1987 to meet airline needs for graduates with a wide industry perspective. Our programmes include academic degrees for aviation managers, and a professional degree for aspiring pilots incorporating flight training with academic studies.
Our research contributes to aviation industry knowledge.
The school is based at two locations: the Milson Flight Systems Centre at Palmerston North Airport, and the Massey University Manawatū campus in Palmerston North.

Humanities disciplines bring together the many different aspects of what it means to be human. In the School of Humanities we ask fundamental questions about society and culture and examine our individual and collective achievements, fascinations and follies in both the past and present.
Learning about and studying languages and cultures is an excellent preparation for participating in our increasingly interconnected world. An understanding of where we have come from as people, and our fundamental beliefs, is developed in many of the other disciplines offered in the humanities at Massey University.

Massey University has grown from a small agricultural college in Palmerston North to become New Zealand's largest residential university spread over three cities. Massey University now has three campuses in the North Island, and the highest number of extramural students.
Massey began as an agricultural college in Palmerston North. On the 1 February 1927, the Council for the Agricultural College appointed the Principal and Chair of Agriculture. Geoffrey Peren became the Principal and William Riddet the Chair in Agriculture and director of the Dairy Research Institute. The college officially opened on 20 March 1928 as a fully constituent college of the University of New Zealand.
The College continued to grow and expand its academic offerings and facilities with the Great Depression and World War II finally over. During this time the College was working towards becoming a fully autonomous university.
Massey University College of Manawatu became Massey University of Manawatu on 1 January 1964 under the Massey University of Manawatu Act 1963. The new university had full autonomy and degree-conferring powers under the Act. The name was shortened in 1966 to Massey University.
Massey University expanded in the 1990s with new campuses in Auckland and Wellington. The university also offered more diverse academic programmes that increased its international focus and its services to the community.
Massey offers the only veterinary science programmes in New Zealand. Massey also offers the only Bachelor of Aviation degree in New Zealand. Massey University qualifications are recognised worldwide and several programmes have international accreditation.
From 85 students in the first year, Massey now has over 35,000 internal and extramural students.
Undergraduate academic entrance requirements
- For most undergraduate level programmes, the minimum academic entry requirement is successful completion of a qualification equivalent to the New Zealand Year 13 - NCEA Level 3 University Entrance. International students need to check the equivalency of their secondary school qualification by reviewing the list of Academic Admission Requirements by Country.
- International students who have previously studied at a New Zealand secondary school should refer to the secondary school requirements section.
- International students who have completed 3 x B at level 5 or 6 passes in the New Zealand Diploma of Business may apply for entry into a Bachelor's programme.
- An NZQA transcript as formal evidence of the NZDipBus results is required before credit will be assessed and only papers with a minimum grade of B will be assessed for credit.
- The English language requirements can be met by:
- A minimum IELTS 5.5 (or equivalent) used to gain entry to the NZDipBus or,
- A recent IELTS 6.0 with no band score less than 5.5

An appropriate undergraduate degree from a recognised tertiary institution is required
Doctorate degrees (PhD)
The equivalent or better of a relevant Bachelor's (Hons) or Master's Degree with First or Second Class Honours, Division 1 (B+ and above) with sufficient prior experience of independent research at postgraduate level

At Massey, internships and industry placements provide opportunities for applied learning in many programmes and enhance their attractiveness within the international marketplace.
Massey has six students' associations. They aim to make sure that university students enjoy the best university experience possible. They provide leadership to the student body and are also student advocates to the university and wider community.
Students' associations are also responsible for running events such as Orientation Week and the 'Unity in Diversity' festival.

Massey Manawatū in Palmerston North is about connecting and growing in specialties such as Agribusiness and Food Technology, supported by world class teaching and research. It is home to top academics across a wide range of disciplines including our internationally recognised Veterinary Science and Aviation programmes. The campus boasts great sporting facilities, a state-of-the-art food plant, seven farms and there is plenty to do in Palmerston North – a truly student friendly city.
Wellington campus
Our Wellington campus is a friendly and vibrant place where you will be challenged to apply your creative thinking in new ways. It is home to New Zealand’s most distinguished School of Design, and world-class research centres for public health, sleep, Māori health, disaster research, and tertiary teaching excellence. It is also home to our postgraduate journalism programme, the oldest qualification of its kind in the country.
Borderless campus
Massey University has been a distance education provider for over 50 years and each year, 15,000 students study by distance education with us. To meet the growing demand from students living around the world, Massey University is expanding our international delivery by distance education. Many of our undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes are now available fully online to international students via our borderless campus.
