Curriculum

The integrated study programme consists of 3 blocks of subjects. The first, which is called the general higher education block, consists of liberal arts, social studies, mathematics and natural sciences. Basic veterinary medicine studies comprise the subjects of biomedical sciences such as anatomy, histology, physiology, biochemistry etc. The third block includes subjects in the fields of specialization and makes up approximately 60 per cent of the curriculum.

Lithuanian language is taught during the first 3 years.

Teaching Method

Coursework is organized into semesters during the first year: students have 5-7 subjects every semester. Starting with the second year, studies are organized in cycles: students learn 3 or 4 subjects simultaneously.

Evaluation of performance

Examinations are taken upon completion of each subject or module. Students must past integrated practical ant theoretical examinations of 9 modules (pathology, surgery etc.).

The studies are completed by a masters thesis defence.

Competences you gain

Graduates in veterinary medicine will have the ability to:

· conduct clinical research on animals and assess the results of laboratory tests;

· diagnose animal diseases by analysing the structure and functions of an animal body;

· treat animals and apply the prevention, utilisation and control measures of animal diseases;

· assess an epidemiological situation regarding animal diseases and infectious diseases common both for animals and people;

· control food and forage safety from primary production to the final product;

· organise the implementation of animal safety measures according to the legislation requirements;

· work in a team solving professional issues and constantly improve professional skills.

After graduation

A qualification of a veterinary surgeon enables graduates to start their own veterinary practice as a veterinary doctor, be employed in the state veterinary services, international veterinary organisations or as specialists of veterinary hygiene can work in business related to animal production, slaughterhouses, food enterprises and various public or non-governmental organisations and institutions.

Graduates may also consider undertaking further residency studies, leading to a qualification of a specialist in veterinary medicine, or study for a PhD.

International students could be admitted into the English programme of the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences if they provide the legalized high school or college certificate and transcript (officially translated into English) and meet the Entrance Exam requirements.Good grades in biology, chemistry and physics will give preference.Good knowledge of English language is obligatory.
