Photonics is one of the scientific disciplines which will have great influence in science and technology in the 21st century. In short, photonics can be defined as a scientific and technological discipline that studies and applies the properties of light and its interaction with material.
Photonics plays an essential role in the discovery of new phenomena in nature and in the development of new technologies, and is of key importance in the generation of knowledge as well as in the market of innovative products.
Photonicsengineering allows discoveries in photonic laboratories to be further developed with the aim of commercialising and converting them into a practical benefit for society. Nanophotonics interrelates the science of light with nanotechnology and aims to develop new devices with greater precision and better characteristics than those currently existing. Biophotonics is paving the way for new advances in the research of biological systems and biotechnology ranging from molecular scale to macroscopic objects such as organs.
Students will spend their first semester (30 ECTS credits) in the Université Paul Cézanne Aix Marseille III, and their second semester (30 ECTS credits) in the Universität Karlsruhe. In order to earn your Master's degree in Spain, you must spend at least one semester (30 ECTS credits) in one of the participating Spanish universities.
Mobility
The master is divided into four semesters:
The first two semesters are dedicated to the teaching of fundamentals in the first semester (30 ECTS) and core subjects in optics and photonics in the second semester (30 ECTS).
The third semester (30 ECTS) brings specialization teaching, with specific scientific fields provided by the different partners :
* - Imaging (microscopy advanced techniques applied to biophotonics / biomedical imaging / imaging tools from astronomy) in Marseille,
* - photonic materials and devices / nanobiology / optical engineering in Karlsruhe
* - nanophotonics /quantum optics/ photonics engineering (oriented to metrology and other areas that complement those in Karlsruhe) in Barcelona.
Several topics will constitute core subjects present in each partner institution: Photonics engineering (a basic requirement for future researchers and engineers in optics, that will be approached in complementary ways in each partner institution),- Biophotonics and Nanophotonics (key applications of Photonics today).
These teaching lectures will be completed by practical and lab works, including possibilities for industrial internships. Lectures in languages, management and project organization will be delivered as human sciences complementary knowledge which is essential for future scientists.
The fourth semester is dedicated to the Master thesis work, which can include student research projects offered by the laboratories present in the consortium, or by others. This master thesis will lead to a report and a defence (with a total of 30 ECTS) held in one of the partners places.
