Are you interested in studying within our highly ranked Department and well respected Essex Business School? Our joint MSc Accounting and Financial Economics offers compulsory modules evenly split between both.
Your modules taught by our Department of Economics include Mathematical Methods in which you will gain a good understanding of optimisation theory, but also understand formally how economic arguments work and the role of equilibrium. Economics of Financial Markets explores the notions of risk and return in equity markets, both in the context of asset pricing and in the management of equity portfolios. Essex Business School modules include Management Accounting and Issues in Financial Reporting, so you gain in-depth knowledge of the use of accounting information in organisational control and decision making, plus the use of financial statements and the problems of measurement and disclosure. You will also take optional modules and write a dissertation.
Graduates will be well placed for success in decision making in the interface between economics and accounting. Key skills include analytical reasoning, mathematical techniques, research and the evaluation of business accounts.
A Masters course is an academically rigorous programme during which you explore your subject in depth, reaching a high level of specialist knowledge. You draw on knowledge and skills from your undergraduate study or your professional life to produce work of a high academic standard, informed by current thinking and debate.
This course lasts twelve months (full-time), starting in October, and consists of taught modules during your autumn and spring terms and a research-based dissertation to be submitted in September. Your research-based dissertation counts for 40 credits and you will take seven 20 credit modules, four of which are compulsory. (If you are from the EU, then our Masters courses are regarded as second-cycle qualifications under the Bologna Declaration and consist of 90 ECTS credits).
