Advanced Metrology and Optical Instrumentation

Description

The EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Advanced Metrology is a multidisciplinary research centre established in 2011 at the University of Huddersfield, with key partners including NPL, Rolls-Royce, Renishaw and Taylor Hobson.

Metrology is the science of measurement and is a fundamental and underpinning capability without which products cannot be manufactured. The Centre’s main focus of research is on developing new methods, techniques and tools (software, instruments, processes) to support the adoption of in-process dimensional and surface metrology for high value, precision manufactured components (e.g. aerospace engine components, medical implants, optical components, and microelectronics). This drive to manufacture, measure and correct in-process we call the ‘factory on the machine’.

To support the continuing research priorities of the Centre and a number of its industry partners, up to 12 funded PhD studentships are available (for an October 2013 start) to work on three-year research projects related to mathematics for metrology, machine tool metrology, optical instrument development, and novel measurement applications in precision engineering and bio-engineering.

Full fees and tax-free stipend (currently £13,590 p.a.) will be available for successful candidates.

Requirements

We are looking for talented UK/EU graduates with a 1st or 2:1 degree in a relevant scientific subject (physics, mathematics, engineering science, etc.) and an interest in manufacturing, metrology and/or optical instrumentation.
