Description
Art and Film offers a unique and distinctive opportunity to combine the study of both academic disciplines, art history and film in a single honours degree. It cuts across the boundaries of different visual media, exploring perspective, colour and light, movement, montage and the portrayal of painting, photography, drawings, prints and sculpture in film and video. The interdisciplinary approach which underpins Art and Film is central to the Kent ethos.
During the course, we examine all kinds of works of art, including films and performance art, in order to understand the theories, movements and ideas that have shaped them. We also look at the settings (for example, museums, galleries, cinemas) in which works of art and films are produced and viewed, examining how such settings affect our perceptions.
Academic staff at Kent have recognised expertise in the fields of film, aesthetics, modernism, photography, contemporary and post-conceptual art, and the modules reflect these interests, such as the origins of cinema within the 19th century, and the uses of still and moving images by modernist and avant-garde artists and film-makers. We also offer a placement year option for those wishing to develop their work experience during their degree. Students also have the opportunity to undertake a dissertation in their final year on a subject of their choice, in negotiation with their appointed supervisor.
In 2014, the University opened a new 62-seat cinema named after the pioneering female film director Ida Lupino, which students can enjoy as part of their experience during their studies. The Lupino has state-of-the-art digital projection and sound, and has been created to provide an intimate atmosphere for film viewing.
Independent rankings
In the National Student Survey 2013 93% of arts students were satisfied with the quality of their course. And, Art at Kent was ranked 6th overall and 6th for graduate prospects in The Guardian University Guide 2014.
In the National Student Survey 2013, Kent was ranked 1st for student satisfaction in cinematics. And, Kent was ranked 12th for cinematics in The Complete University Guide 2014.

Year in industry
The School of Arts Placement Year gives you an opportunity to gain relevant workplace experience as part of your programme of study. It provides you with an opportunity to increase your contacts and network so that you can hit the ground running when you graduate.
The placement year is in addition to your standard undergraduate programme and normally falls between your second and final year. The year itself is assessed on a pass/fail basis through employer feedback and a written report that you submit.
