The pharmaceutical industry is one of the most rapidly growing sectors of biomedical science. Many medical conditions and diseases that previously required hospital stays are now being treated with novel drugs and biopharmaceuticals. With the completion of the sequencing of the human genome, many more targets for these types of treatment will become apparent. This program provides a solid foundation in analytical, organic, and physical chemistry, an introduction to biochemistry, toxicology, and microbiology, together with drug formulation and manufacturing, analysis, and biopharmaceuticals. Students taking the Co-op option will complete their degree in five years.Career opportunities may be found in the design and synthesis of new pharmaceutical products; drug toxicology and pharmacokinetics; biomedical research; drug manufacturing and formulation; and the analysis of foods, tissues, forensic samples.
Field of study: Medicinal and Pharmaceutical Chemistry (MS, PhD)
