The master program Construction Management and Engineering (CME) offers a broad spectrum of courses focusing on the growing need for reform in the building industry. The program prepares the student for a life in the dynamic environment of the construction business by focusing on knowledge of processes, lifecycle and risk management; and contracts to name a few.
What you will learn
A degree in CME will provide the student with an extensive knowledge in the field of management and communication with courses such as cross-cultural management, financial engineering and project management playing an important role. The students participating in this program not only develop their engineering, problem solving and communication skills but also learn how to achieve desired changes in the building industry and assess the consequences for the construction process and its organization.
Construction Management and Engineering is multidisciplinary, international orientated and is a cooperation between the faculties of Civil Engineering, Architecture and Technology, Policy and Management.
Career Perspectives
Almost all of the CME students have found work within 3 months of graduation. CME graduates typically accept positions as management trainees at large companies within the building industry, but also in other sectors. Many currently work in large multinationals such as Shell, and in consultancy firms like McKinsey, but most of them work at large (international) engineering firms like Van Oort, Royal Haskoning, Heijmans, DHV, PRC, Ballast Nedam and BAM.
CME graduates are equally comfortable speaking to technical experts and engineers, as to management, and often work in interdisciplinary environments. They have a systematic approach to problem solving, think analytically, discern linkage between technical and social aspects of a situation, and are adept at recognizing common patterns linking issues across domain boundaries.
In the MSc Construction Management and Engineering the student will be educated on different aspects around managing large international construction projects. Therefore the building- or construction project has a central position within the MSc program of CME Delft. On top of that it addresses the growing need for reforms within the building and construction industry and teaches students how to deal with this present and future transitions.
Construction Management & Engineering is a full-time two-year (120 ECTS) Master's program in English. Students can enroll in the program in September and February.
The MSc program CME consists of four parts: the core curriculum (including cornerstones), electives and the final MSc thesis.
Core Curriculum
There are five compulsory courses at the core of the two-year MSc programme offered by the Delft University of Technology, which aim to develop and broaden your knowledge of the field. These five courses are also called the cornerstones.
* Project Management
* Process Management
* Legal & Governance Aspects
* Collaborative Design & Engineering
* Integration and Orientation.
Next to these five courses there are also some other compulsory courses in the CME Delft program.
Electives
In the CME Programme there is also room for elective courses.
Thesis
The thesis is worth 32 ECTS. The subjects of the thesis are closely related to the research programmes of the participating research groups in the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences and the Faculty of Technology, Policy and Management. The central theme throughout the different research programmes is process and system innovations in the BC industry. The thesis mainly focuses on the generic properties of research questions that are of relevance to practical problems.
Examples of this are themes such as:
* Stakeholder participation in the construction process
* Forms of tendering and outsourcing
* Transition management
* Professional clientship
* Policy and governance aspects
* Supply chain integration and reversal
* Dynamic life cycle support
* Building Information Modeling (BIM)
* Instrumentation (IT)
Students are, of course, welcome to come up with their own thesis subjects (in consultation with a lecturer) according to their interests
