Course Content

Course Characteristics

In the International Game Architecture and Design programme, your creative, technological and commercial skills will be trained. In the development of games you will need to develop specific skills to make the right choices in content, design, graphics, storyline and audio.
During your four years of study you will work in the Game Lab. Together with your fellow students you will learn, practically, how to develop games. Throughout your studies the assignments become increasingly complex.

NHTV is official partner of Sony and is joining in the PlayStation®First Academic Partnership Programme. This means you are developing games for PlayStation 3 (PS3), PlayStation Portable (PSP) and PlayStation Network (PSN). PlayStation® hardware and software will take a central place in the teaching curriculum of this programme.

If you apply for the International Game Architecture and Design programme, the first choice you make is which variation you want to study in. You can choose from four variations:

  • 3D Visual Art
  • Programming
  • Design and Production
  • Indie Game Development

Educational vision

Educational outline

The four-year programme consists of four variations. Variations aside, you follow a shared general programme. This is a mixture of workshops and lectures, delivered by qualified (international) lecturers. The programme is fully taught in English.

Valuable practical experience

As the International Game Architecture and Design programme offers education in close collaboration with the games industry, it is highly practical. Guest lectures and field trips will be organised on a regular basis, and the placement and graduation project enable you to gain a total of twelve months practical experience in real-life, professional environments.

Game Lab

At the heart of the course is the Game Lab, a fully equipped development studio in which you work on real assignments from real clients. In a multi-disciplinary group of up to twelve students, you put your knowledge and skills into practice and develop your specialisation. Secured from the games industry, and in a real-life setting, you get to find out what game development is really all about.
Throughout the entire programme you will spend an average of one day per week working in the Game Lab. As you progress, the games you produce become increasingly complex.

Broad-based education and in-depth specialism

You choose your variation before you start studying. This means that you have enough time to get to know all aspects of the industry whilst you continuously deepen your knowledge and strengthen your skills. Towards the final terms, the content focuses on your chosen variation and the emphasis is on depth of knowledge.

Working together in groups in the Game Lab and the comprehensive nature of the curriculum ensures that this programme is unique in the Netherlands.
