The MSc Economics aims to provide students with a thorough knowledge and understanding of the concepts, tools and methods of modern economics, together with the application of these methods to the analysis of economic problems.

The programme is designed to equip students to undertake independent research in economics and also to provide the training necessary for a career as an economist in the public and the private sector.

The MSc Economics provides advanced training in economic analysis and offers a wide range of optional subjects. It offers students the opportunity to study particular areas of economics in greater depth, from both a theoretical and an empirical perspective.

The programme is full-time and lasts for 12 months, with nine months of taught modules between October and June of the academic year, followed by three months of supervised research for a masters dissertation.

You can expect to enjoy predominantly small-group teaching and a considerable degree of individual attention from members of staff. MSc students are strongly encouraged to attend our seminars and research workshops. Our MSc students usually form a lively and cohesive group which plays an active role in the Division's academic and social life.

Modules are assessed by examination at the end of each semester.

Year 1
The final three months of the programme are spent preparing a masters dissertation, to be completed by the end of September. The topic for research is chosen with the advice and guidance of members of Economics academic staff, with supervision provided by a member of staff with related research interests.

If students decide not to complete a dissertation or fail to reach the required standard in the dissertation, they may be awarded a diploma.
