This course is suitable if you are interested in the analysis of language and would like to further your studies of linguistic analysis of texts and conversation. It is beneficial if you have a degree in a humanities subject, but you do not necessarily need to have a wide knowledge of linguistics.

The course focuses on providing you with a working knowledge of current linguistics, text and conversation analysis. By engaging with some of the major theoretical research on a range of subject areas, such as

* linguistics
* discourse analysis
* sociolinguistics
* literary linguistics, you gain a rounded overview of current research.

Throughout this course you are equipped with a set of tools for analysing texts and conversation. We encourage you to engage with a range of linguistic theories, approaches and methodologies. This helps you to develop a high degree of competence in linguistic analysis and critical thought.

As well as the taught elements of the course, you can attend research seminars in language and linguistics which are held throughout the year. These seminars are given by visiting speakers from other universities on topics relating to the course.

Research methods for linguists

This covers a range of topics including

* working with processed data
* recording transcribing and analysing spoken language
* designing and developing a research project
* interrogating arguments
* intellectual property. Examined by portfolio of research tasks.

Approaches to language and communication

Topics include

* models and theories of phonology and syntax
* speech acts
* Gricean pragmatics
* relevance theory
* politeness

Language in textThis covers o critical discourse analysis o transitivity, nominalisation and passivisation o contemporary stylistics o literary linguistics. Examined by essay
Language variation and perceptionTopics include o historical studies in language variation o studying the perception of variation o language attitudes o folk linguistics. Examined by essay.
Language focused work-based learningThis module focuses on a linguistic topic investigated within the workplace, for example, a politeness audit of a workplace or an analysis of customer and workforce communication. Examined by portfolio of work.
DissertationYou choose a language or linguistics topic for your dissertation supervised by a member of staff.

Normally a 2.1 degree or equivalent in a humanities subject.International students also need certified competence in English language from one of the following * British Council IELTS test band 7.0 * Cambridge Examinations Board pass in Certificate in Proficient English (Proficiency) or Certificate in Advanced English or a First Certificate in English at A or B grade plus a further year´s English study * Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of 600 (paper-based), 250 (computer-based) or 100 (Internet based) plus some independent assessment of speaking.
