Designed for students who would like to advance their understanding of the changing nature of global politics, and involving discussion of the impact of globalisation, the rise of global governance, the politics of human rights, and other significant topics in global politics.
The increasingly global nature of political relations is typically underscored by equally global economic relations in trade, finance, migration, concern over which is reflected in questions about shifting loci of global authority from 'west' (eg Europe and the USA) to 'east' (eg China and India) and ongoing relationships between the global rich and the global poor.
The aims of the programme are to provide you with:
* knowledge and understanding the main approaches to the study of global politics
* knowledge and understanding of the main issues and events that challenge contemporary understandings of global politics
* knowledge and understanding of philosophical and methodological debates in the study of politics and international relations
* knowledge and understanding and experience in the application of the principal methods of data collection and data analysis in social science research
* knowledge and understanding and experience in the practice of qualitative methods in social science research
* the skills necessary to design and complete a dissertation on a specialist topic in the field of global politics.
Compulsory modules: Design and statistical analysis of surveys; Global politics and international relations; Qualitative methods; Researching politics and international relations
Two optional modules from: A wide range in either the Politics and International Relations or the Sociology and Social Policy divisions
Plus: Dissertation (12,50015,000 words)
Please note: Optional modules are run according to staff availability and student uptake.
Duration: 1 year (full-time); 2 years (part-time)
Assessment: Coursework and/or examination; you must complete all taught modules satisfactorily before being eligible to submit a dissertation leading to an MSc
