This special track within the European and International Law Master is dedicated to international economic law, the legal rules of conduct that govern the economic relations for states and regions.
International investment law is a growing subject area in the curriculum. In this field, we examine the treaty frameworks that govern international investments and the disputes that arise between investors and states. The Master's programme in International and European Law deals with two aspects of international economic law. The first is the law of the World Trade Organization and its dispute settlement system as it relates to governmental trade barriers, protectionism and trade-related regulations. Secondly, the track examines international investment law in the use of bilateral investment agreements and the role of investment arbitration in protecting foreign investors. The academic staff of the track in International Trade and Investment Law are highly qualified international and European lawyers. The University of Amsterdam has been granting an LLM for this subject area since the early 1990's. The nature of the study lends itself to connections with international economics and politics.
This track consists of 50 ECTS credits for core courses and 10 credits for a Master's thesis. Students are expected to obtain 60 ECTS credits throughout the course of the degree.
Students may apply for participation in moot courts dealing with WTO or investment arbitration. A three-day study trip to Geneva is planned for the spring (at students' own expense).
