International Politics

Description

This degree focuses on politics in an international context. As well as providing a foundation in the approaches to, and theories of, politics and international relations, the programme will develop your understanding of the importance of politics in a globalising and integrating world.

Careers

Studying politics will equip you with a range of transferable skills that will enable you to follow the career you want after graduation. A major attraction of our courses is the wide variety of career opportunities to which they can lead.

Our students pursue a wide variety of jobs after graduating. Some, like Margaret McDonagh or John McDonnell MP, opt for careers in politics. Others have joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the Home Office, GCHQ and military intelligence.

Many have gone on to work in public and private sector organisations, such as Chase Manhattan, Marks & Spencer, British Airways, Coca Cola, Schweppes, HSBC and NHS Confederation. Significant numbers have taken further training to pursue careers in broadcasting, journalism, law, and teaching at every level.

Our graduates

Past students have gone on to further training in law, accountancy, personnel management and other graduate degrees. They have joined the Civil Service (fast stream), BBC Radio and Granada Television, have gone into publishing and journalism, have entered major financial and accountancy firms (such as PricewaterhouseCoopers and Lloyds Bowmaker Finance Group) or the fields of management and marketing (with firms such as Ford, Metal Box and Rank Xerox), and have also pursued careers in local government.

Course Content

You take a number of prescribed ‘core’ modules combined with a number of optional modules at Levels 2 and 3. At Level 3, you will also have the opportunity to pursue your particular interests in researching and writing your major project.

Dissertation

Students produce a 12,000 word dissertation on a subject of their choice. This major piece of work, undertaken with the support and supervision of a dissertation tutor, will give you a valuable opportunity to demonstrate research and writing skills. It is written on a subject relevant to your particular course of study and may well relate to your future career plans.

• BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma D*D*D in a related subject.

• BTEC Level 3 Diploma D*D in a related subject with an A-level at grade A.

• BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma D in a related subject with A-levels grade AA.

• International Baccalaureate Diploma 35 points.

• Access to Higher EducationDiploma Complete and pass a related subject Access course with 45 credits at Level 3, of which 30 credits must be at Distinction and 15 credits at Merit or higher.

GCSE Mathematics grade C and GCSE English grade C are also required.
