The Masters in Management and Finance is a taught, one-year, full-time programme. The course is divided into three 15 week semesters. In the first two semesters, contact time averages about 15 hours a week for the first ten to twelve weeks, leaving the last three to five weeks for examinations. The third semester is given over to the Managerial Reports Module, which involves 12 hours of workshops and then ongoing contact time with your tutor as you prepare a substantial piece of work (up to 14,000 words) on a real-world business and management topic.

Some of our Masters students already have some business experience; some are coming straight from their first degree. Some are already committed to a career in Management and/or Finance; some are thinking of continuing to work in an academic context. Whatever your own previous experience or future aspiration, you will be given, in the first Semester, an all-round grounding in the essentials of Business and Management, based on the most up-to-date understanding of management theory and good practice.

The second Semester then focuses more directly on the specialist areas of Financial Markets and Investment and Corporate Financial Management. These are the white hot topics of the moment in the business world. Studying them will equip you for career opportunities either working directly in the Financial Sector or in business areas where a sophisticated understanding of the workings of finance is essential.
You will benefit from an outstanding variety of in-class and outside learning environments. In-class activities include lectures, seminars, workshops, guest speakers and career development activities. Outside activities include managerial field trips, case study visits, outward-bound skills development activities, managerial reporting and liaison with professionals in business and industry.

We offer small class sizes and a friendly environment to encourage communication and the sharing of experiences, opinions and observations among you and your colleagues. Alongside new knowledge and skills, as a graduate of the Aberystwyth Masters in Management and Finance, you will emerge with broadened horizons and a network of new friends and contacts in the Business world, locally, nationally and internationally.

Key Skills and Competencies

Fundamentals of Business and Management

The Masters in Management and Finance begins with a range of modules which introduce the fundamentals of Business and Management, which will apply to any sphere of business activity and, in many cases, to several kinds of non-business organisation. In the first semester, modules in Human Resource Management, Research Skills for Managers and Information Management Systems are designed to enable you to maximise the productivity and efficiency of an organisation, focusing on the working and management relationships which are essential to its continued success, to the quality of life of its employees and to the service it offers to its customers and other stakeholders. Other modules in this semester introduce you to foundational principles in Accounting and Finance and in Marketing and the Business Environment.
Advanced Skills in Management and Finance

As you would expect, the further content of this Masters degree is strongly weighted in favour of understanding all aspects of Business Finance. You will study modules in Corporate Financial Management, Opportunities and Risks in International Business and Competitive and Corporate Strategy, all taught by lecturers who work at the cutting edge of research in Management Studies. But the guts of the second semester is the double module in Financial Markets and Investment, which will enable you to evaluate the operation of financial markets, understand the role of financial institutions, and analyse the management of an investment portfolio in theory and in practice.
Cultural Diversity in the Financial World

The rich cultural diversity of the international student body of Aberystwyth SMB is a great experience in and of itself. But it will also give you new and important discoveries about the world of international business and finance. Islamic Banking, for example, is just one very important instance of the different ways in which different cultures deal differently with Business Finance, and you will find a similar diversity of thinking and practice in relation to every aspect of Business and Management. You will be introduced to the requirements of different financial market places and the importance of cultural awareness in dealing with business colleagues and customers from all over the world: in the UK and Western Europe, and in the emerging markets of new-accession EU states, China, India and others. Both in modules dealing specifically with International Financial Markets and in sharing with student colleagues from all round the world, Aberystwyth SMB offers you great opportunities to learn from other cultures.
Leadership Development

We believe that our Masters in Management and Finance students will be significant future leaders in the field of Business and Finance. Studying for this Masters degree will allow you to reflect on what style of management and leadership you want to develop, amongst colleagues with very different styles which are just as effective. It will also introduce you to the different styles of Business leadership which occur in different cultures, helping you to understand business leaders from many different parts of the world. All your learning about your own leadership development and the leadership styles of others is focused and reinforced in your third term, where 30% of your marks for your Management Report Dissertation will be awarded for your work on leadership development and future improvement plan.
