The program has a specific focus towards important subjects within the context of the maritime industry. Some courses are addressing subjects which are fully maritime business related. Other courses are more generic in character- however still covering topics of special importance for the maritime industry.

The commercial program is run in parallel with a similar technical oriented program. 75% of the courses are given to students of both programs. The specific commercial courses are covering issues such as maritime economics, maritime finance, accounting, supply chain management, strategy management and maritime law.

As indicated by the title of the program the study is addressed towards candidates aiming towards management types of jobs. To some degree learning of management and leadership skills are addressed as specific topics within the education. However, highest priority is given for the candidates to acquire a broad basis of knowledge and understanding of the important basic subjects as relevant for the maritime industry, within the technical and the commercial specialization respectively.

Priority within the program is also given to assignments and other interactive forums to achieve good training in solving complex problems in close cooperation with others within a multi-disciple environment.

Special attention is given to topics of currently high priority within the maritime industry, in particular related to improvement of safety and environmental performance and renewal of the industry though innovations.

Admission to the commercial program requires either (i) bachelor degree in economics and administration or (ii) maritime bachelor degree in shipping and logistics or (iii) corresponding educationAlternatively, a work-integrated educational program at bachelor level can qualify for admission provided that it contains minimum 120 ETCS credits specifically relevant for the programFor admission to the program it is required that the applicant has completed the qualifying bachelor degree with an average grade level of C or better. Applicants with lower average grade may be admitted if documentation is provided to justify that the candidate has the ability to complete the master degree study.Equivalent education in science and engineering can qualify for admission subject to evaluation on an individual basis.
