The Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) program at the University of Central Lancashire is a comprehensive and rigorous undergraduate degree designed to prepare students for a career in medicine. Course Content

The aims of this programme are to deliver a graduate who is able to take on the roles and responsibilities of a medical doctor entering a foundation postgraduate training programme (or equivalent internationally) and underpinned by the requirements laid out by the General Medical Council. Graduates will be able to:

• Apply biomedical scientific principles, method and knowledge to their medical practice

• Carry out consultations with patients, using appropriate communication and examination skills and use their findings to diagnose problems and formulate management plans

• Demonstrate competence in a range of professional skills necessary for patient care, working with others in an ethical manner and putting patient safety at the core of their work

• Use reflective practice to inform continuing professional development and enhanced competencies and to continually maintain their skills as a doctor

• Demonstrate and apply the principles of quality of care and legal and ethical principles and regulations as described by the Care Quality Commission, General Medical Council, Royal Medical Colleges and WHO guidance

The aims of this programme are to deliver graduates who are ableto take on the roles and responsibilities of a medical doctor enteringinto the international equivalent of a foundation postgraduate training programme as required by the GMC.There are three vertical themes which run throughout the five year programme:

Integrated Science and Clinical Medicine (ISCM) – this themeincludes much of the human systems-based teaching throughoutthe programme. The scientific concepts that underpin human biology, health and disease in relation to the practice of medicinewill be delivered within this theme.

Evidence Informed Practice of Medicine (EIPOM) – thistheme focuses on the wider determinants of health and wellbeingat community and population levels. Key concepts from epidemiology, public health, the sociology and psychology of healthand illness and evidence-based practice are within this theme.

Medical Skills and Quality Care (MSQC) – this theme developsthe clinical and communication skills needed by a medical doctorthrough the practise of skills in a laboratory setting and with patients.This theme also addresses the knowledge and skills in professionalismwhich will be captured and reflected on using an ePortfolio.Throughout the programme, students will follow patients on theircare pathways, exposing them to the complexity of patients’ healthproblems. This process ensures the interaction and integration of the three MB BS programme themes.

Years 1 and 2

Years 1 and 2 are designed to give you a good grounding in medical sciences, so you start to integrate this knowledge with communication and clinical skills. You’ll be taught by expert practitioners in our state-of-the-art clinical skills laboratories on the City campus in Preston and enjoy community placements across East Lancashire and in Bridgewater Community NHS Healthcare Trust, with a secondary care induction at the end of year 2.

Years 3 and 4

In years 3 and 4, you’ll rotate through supervised clinical placements in a variety of specialties, in both primary and secondary care. Placements are based mainly at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust with some specialist placements being provided by Lancashire Care Foundation Trustand Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. In addition, you’ll undertake primary care placements in general practices and community settings across East Lancashire and in Bridgewater Community NHS Healthcare Trust, as well as spending one day per week at a UCLan campus for additional teaching in Preston or Burnley.

If you’re considering USMLE examinations, you’ll be provided with additional support for preparation.

Year 5

Year 5 is dedicated to providing you with the opportunity to develop your early professional practice through a rotation of apprenticeships. These are designed to encourage independent working, with close supervision from departmental mentors and your assigned clinical supervisor. Apprenticeships will be completed in a range of specialties, including:

• Urgent/Emergency Care
• Acute Medicine and Surgery
• Community
• Student Selected Component

Year 5 concludes with a 4-week student assistantship shadowing a foundation doctor.

Year 5 is dedicated to providing studentswith the opportunity to develop their earlyprofessional practice. This is realised through a rotation of four, six week apprenticeships. These are designed to encourage independent working with close supervision from departmental mentors and an assigned clinical supervisor.These will be completed in a range of specialties, including:

• Acute Medicine and Surgery

• Student Selected ComponentStudents’ progress will be monitored using an ePortfolio. This will documentwork-based competencies and evidence of continuing professional development.Students will continue to work within small peer groups.Support will be provided in the form ofmeetings with peer groups.

Continuous assessment

Continuous assessment provides the student with regular opportunities to consolidate their learning. Students andtheir tutor can monitor progress and identify, at an early stage, where there may be need for additional help with their studies.Continuous assessment will include:

• Annual appraisal: modelled on GMC ‘Good Medical Practice’
• ePortfolio: This will be used to review the development of the student’s reflective practice and document completion of clinical competencies

End-of-year examinations

End-of-year examinations measure progression through the core curriculumand use a range of innovative assessmentmethods. These methods will include computer-basedknowledge exams and objective structuredclinical exams (OSCEs), in addition to themore traditional short answer written papers.Final examinations will be taken at the endof year 4.

Year 5 will consist of competency based assessments that will focus on assessing the demonstrable abilities of knowledge,skills and professional behaviour and theirintegration that have been developedthroughout the five year programme.

Accreditation

• General Medical Council

The GMC will quality assure UCLan and its first undergraduate medicine programme. This will take the form of a year by year review following the first cohort to graduation. Only during the final year of the programme will the GMC be able to add UCLan to the list of bodies that can award UK primary medical qualifications. There can be no guarantee that this will be the outcome of the review, and UCLan has contingency arrangements in place so that students enrolled in the programme and who are successfully passing all assessments, will be able to complete their studies and graduate with a GMC recognised medical qualification.
