Based on the philosophy of humanitarianism, social welfare aims to investigate social problems and social phenomena related to social welfare and to seek solutions at the individual, community, and policy levels. Social welfare is a discipline that effectively integrates social welfare knowledge, social work practice skills, and social sciences theories to solve and prevent various social problems within an individual and social context.

Social welfare research broadly consists of research on social welfare policies, social services, and clinical social work. Social welfare policy research focuses on understanding social policies and welfare systems that are aimed to improve individual's quality of life. For example, social welfare policy research develops and evaluates social insurance systems (national pension, health insurance, disaster insurance, employment insurance), national social welfare systems, and labor and industrial policies.
