Technology Management (plus in Engineering)

The NIT Master's programme is designed for ambitious young engineers who strive to become responsible technology managers in a globalised world. The curriculum includes fundamental general management courses such as economics, finance, business strategy, human resources, supply chain management, and marketing. In addition, courses like corporate responsibility, governance, business ethics, teamwork, communication, and conflict management provide an opportunity to learn and reflect about how to become a proficient manager and team leader. To further equip you for the international workplace, the curriculum also includes foreign language classes in a language other than English (usually in German for international students).

Students have a choice of two specialisation modules:
1) The Classic Track offers a number of speciality courses in Technology Management such as Technology Roadmapping, Quality Management, and Management of IT.
2) The E-Track encompasses project-based learning and workshops in entrepreneurial management with a chance to test out new business ideas and models. Students develop an entrepreneurial mindset that is beneficial for future careers in industry as well as new ventures.

Educational organisation

Students benefit from small classes (max. 35 students) and enjoy individual attention. Renowned practitioners team up with German and international professors from acclaimed universities to create an inspirational learning atmosphere for students to discuss current research trends and developments. Tight relationships to international companies and project-based curriculum units make studies at the NIT exceptionally practice-oriented. Teaching methods at the NIT include seminars, case studies, exercises, lectures, workshops at the weekends, and field trips.

In coordination with NIT's Career Services, students spend three to five months in an industrial internship designed to complement their academic studies. They experience specific technologies in real life and can apply their theoretical knowledge in a practical context. Students are introduced to different areas of research, development, and production and get to know industries and companies with relevance to future career paths.

Beyond internship and Master's thesis, the NIT creates many touch points with various HR and R&D representatives. Students participate in field trips to company sites, engage with special guest speakers in the classroom, and attend exclusive events on applied research and company presentations.

In addition to the part-time programme at the NIT, students participate in a full-time MSc programme of their choice at Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH). The NIT programme is awarded with a Master of Arts or an MBA in Technology Management, the TUHH programme with an MSc in Engineering.

Internships

A three-month internship is a compulsory part of the NIT programme. For scholarship holders, it will normally be undertaken with the industry partner. A Master's thesis in cooperation with industry is also possible.
Beyond internship and Master's thesis, the NIT creates many touch points with various HR and R&D representatives.

Course objectives

The aim of the programme is to promote among future technology managers the ability and readiness to deal professionally and responsibly with economic and non-economic factors of enterprise activities in different roles, functions and industries in a globalised environment.

The programme focuses on:

• subject-related competencies: understanding and judging microeconomic, macroeconomic and legal issues in the context of management decisions made within an enterprise
• cross-subject competencies: the ability to make relevant connections between various disciplines utilised within management, as well as to understand ethical dilemmas and socio-cultural factors in the context of management decisions made within an enterprise
• methodical competencies: the capability to apply and transfer knowledge
• key qualifications: the achievement of professional work conduct through goal-orientation, prioritisation, self-organisation, and time management, as well as the mastering of various social situations through social competence and the application of a further foreign language to be learned

Language requirements

Excellent English language skills are required. A minimum Internet-based TOEFL score of 90 or an IELTS score of 6.5 is necessary.

Academic requirements

• A Bachelor's degree in an engineering subject
• Average grades in the superior segment
• Practical or professional experience is an advantage (career experience not essential for admission to the Master of Arts programme, but two years of career experience are required for MBA course)

Enrolment fees

The enrolment fees are included in the tuition fees. A semester ticket covering public transport in the Hamburg metropolitan area is also included.

Costs of living

For a single graduate student, living expenses are estimated at around 535 EUR per month in addition to the rent for an apartment (at NIT building: 300 EUR). NIT students may finance these costs through a student bank loan.

Job opportunities

Due to the workload, a job (even a part-time job) is not advisable. Nevertheless, NIT and TUHH offer a limited number of student jobs within the administration. Also, some of our partner companies offer students the possibility to work as student employees. During the internship, students earn a salary.

Funding opportunities within the university

NIT and its partner companies offer a limited number of scholarships for outstanding candidates. The industrial scholarships cover the tuition fees for the two years.

Services and support for international students

Arrival Service: once you have arrived in Germany, we provide special services for our international students, offering assistance in coping with German bureaucracy. With the help of our partners, we can also help you to find and sign up for health insurance and to set up a bank account. We are also happy to be of assistance when you visit the Foreigners' Registration Office in Hamburg, and to make appointments for you.

Orientation Service: a welcome meeting is scheduled during your first week in Hamburg, at which NIT staff will meet you after the language classes. Continuing students will meet with you to share their academic and personal experience, and personal tutors will help you set up your TUHH timetable for the first semester.

Career Service: NIT has excellent contacts with partners in business, industry, and research. This applies not only to arranging internships with well-known partner companies during your study programme but also extends much further. Due to our extensive corporate network, students are able on completion of their studies to apply for exclusive jobs with our partners.

Host programme: The hosts support international students outside of the university context as personal contacts and advisers. Above all, they are to provide students with an opportunity to get to know the everyday life, culture, customs, and habits of the country. For students this is also a great opportunity to practise their German language skills.

Accommodation

Accommodation is available in the NIT building on campus, so short distances to classes and amenities are guaranteed. The 63 single-room apartments in the building are approx. 20 square metres in size and are fully furnished (bed, table, chair, desk, etc.). They include a kitchenette and a bathroom. For this programme, students can book accommodation on campus for 300 EUR per month.
