Vision Science and Optometry

This dual award program in optometry comprises the 3-year Bachelor of Vision Science followed closely by an 2-year Master of Optometry. Students within the optometry system will work with a range of complex instruments and learn how to use clinical judgement to treat patients in various ways including prescription of lenses and spectacles, or even provide advice on visual and lighting customs. The application will give students an superb comprehension of general and ocular pharmacology, and skills for therapeutic management of eye disease. The Optometry Clinic, located in QUT Health Clinics, allows students to acquire and practice clinical skills under the supervision of registered optometrists. This experience is extended with opportunities to take part in activities that focus on treatment and prevention within the wider area. These activities will introduce pupils to various ethnic and social groups, ages and conditions.

Graduates may apply to the Optometry Board of Australia for registration to practise as optometrists. Observe: both degrees will need to be done before a graduate can make an application for registration as an optometrist; there is not any direct entry to the Master of Optometry course; all applicants enter this application through the Bachelor of Vision Science and progress to the masters course to successful completion of the bachelor program.

• Assumed knowledge: English, or Literature, or English and Literature, or English as an Additional Language (Units 4 & 3, C)
• Mathematical Methods or Specialist Mathematics (Units 4 & 3, C)
• Chemistry (Units 4 & 3, C) and Profession (Units 4 & 3, C).
