The first steps towards founding Abdullah Gul University were taken, by the Kayseri City Council and other city notables, in 2007. The aim was to raise the profile of education in Kayseri in line with the city’s own vision of its development.
The University was named for prominent Kayseri citizen and the 11th president of the Turkish Republic, Abdullah Gül, who only accepted this honour on condition that the university would be dedicated to the quest to become a high-quality university that would be distinguished in Turkey and compete with international institutions.
The university was formally founded on 21 July 2010 as Turkey’s first foundation supported State University.
AGU admitted its first students in the 2013 2014 Academic Year. Education has been conducted at the site of Turkey’s first industrial complex, which is being transformed from being a place of great historical significance to be a place of great educational significance.
In the future, the University will also be served by a second campus, known as Mimar Sinan.
As AGU aspires to its aim of being a research and teaching University of international standards, an institution playing a key role in its development will be the AGU Foundation.
Founded on 13 July 2011, the work of the AGU Foundation is dedicated to the overall goal of supporting the university with the following three specific aims:
To provide financial incentives to successful students
To provide economic cultural and social support to the University’s employees
To fund developments in the university’s physical and technical technological facilities, and underwrite improvement in education, research and opportunities for their application.
At Abdullah Gül University, there are many student-managed clubs that contribute to students’ social development in arts, sports, nature, environment and science. These clubs provide opportunities for students to entertain as well as to improve their social relations and personal qualities in the subjects they are interested in. We encourage all students to join a club activity since taking part in such an activity will give them a chance to develop their skills in terms of leadership, communication, compromise (reconciliation), team work, social awareness, management, and organization.Present clubs are as follows:
Social Support and Charity Club
Music and Performing Arts Club
AGÜ-Dost Club (Outdoor sports)
Sportive Activities Club
International Association Club
Science and Technology Club
Operational Research and Engineering Club

Out of the approximately 200 Turkish universities, only a few of them deliver classes in English. However, at AGU, proficiency in English is crucial. The Abdullah Gül University School of Languages (AGUSL) was founded in this regard with three fundamental aims:
To ensure that all students who are about to enter an AGU faculty are empowered to function effectively in English in the study programs they will follow.
To ensure that all students who graduate from an AGU faculty are empowered to communicate effectively and function professionally in English.
To offer all students the opportunity to gain some familiarity with a second foreign language that has world significance.
All AGU classes are taught in English and AGU students have to complete one year of English preparatory classes before being allowed to join their respective departments. Moreover, each AGU student will attend English classes during a 2-month stay in a US university (within the frame of a partnership with the ELS group) and as part of their preparatory classes. AGU students can also take advantage of many events and university programmes/activities organized in English.
Furthermore, English classes at AGU continue even after the completion of the Preparatory English classes with the Abdullah Gül University Faculty Level English Program (FLE).
The aim of the Abdullah Gül University Faculty Level English Program is to increase student proficiency in academic work in English. It builds on the skills and knowledge that students have acquired either from the AGU Prep. Program, or other institutions (in the case of students who, on arrival at AGU, demonstrated sufficient proficiency in English to be exempted from the Prep. Program).
The FLE is an integrated skills course that prepares students for real world academic work. By the end of the course, students will be able to:
Read and listen extensively in their field;
Keep efficient records of their reading and listening;
Present findings orally to an audience in an academic context;
