Description
Because the skills emphasized by department faculty, including: writing, speaking, critical thinking and technology, MCOM graduates are well-positioned for a wide variety of careers, ranging from traditional media to business to non-profit organizations. MCOM students may pursue a B.A. or B.S. in Journalism or a B.A. or B.S. in Advertising with the following emphases:
- Broadcast Journalism: Students learn storytelling, video production, and performance skills with a focus on a career in the broadcast news or corporate communication industries.
- Creative Strategy (Advertising): Emphasizes the strategic decision-making process behind advertising messages and advertising placement. Prepares students for a career in an advertising agency, non-profit organization, or corporate setting. For more information, contact Professor Roxanne Lucchesi.
- Interactive Media (Advertising): Emphasizes media analytics and messaging in the online context.
- News Editorial Journalism: Students learn writing, reporting, interviewing, storytelling and photography skills focusing on careers in online and print journalism. Graduates of the program work in the media industry, corporate, and non-profit settings.
- Public Relations (Advertising): Emphasizes the public relations process, research, planning, communication and evaluation and prepares students for a career in public relations.

Course Content
The department offers minors in journalism or advertising. For a minor in journalism, you must complete MCOM 210: Newswriting and Reporting and any other MCOM credits to total at least 16.For a minor in advertising, you must complete:
- MCOM 370, Advertising Principles
- MCOM 371/371L, Advertising Copy and Layout
- MCOM 372/372L, Advertising and Media Strategies
- MCOM 476, International and Ethnic Advertising
- Plus, 6 credits from among the following:
- MCOM 243, Public Relations Principles
- MCOM 314, Sales, Promotion and Marketing
- MCOM 442/442L, Integrated Marketing Communication Campaigns
- MCOM 475/575, Public Relations
- MCOM 489, Portfolio Production and Design
